Emma Marie Laurent, known online as “your barefoot BFF,” was one of three young women who died after a vehicle was caught in powerful currents in Nicaragua. Her final social media post was a moving reflection on finding beauty in everyday moments.

A young travel influencer who spent her life exploring the world has died at just 24 after a river swept away the vehicle she was travelling in during a holiday in Nicaragua.

Emma Marie Laurent, a French national who shared her adventures with tens of thousands of followers, was one of three women who died when a Toyota pickup was caught in the strong current of the Nahualapa River.

The incident happened at around 1 a.m. on October 9 in the community of El Manzano, in Nicaragua’s northwestern Chinandega region, following heavy rainfall that caused the river to rise.

The other victims were identified as Swiss tourist Noë Lina Luscher, 20, and Karen Nahomi López Montano, 19, from Nicaragua.

The vehicle’s driver, Mexican national Martin Gerardo García Girón, reportedly survived. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to reports, the group attempted to cross the Nahualapa River after recent rainfall had strengthened its current.

The driver reportedly got out to check the water level before attempting the crossing. However, as the vehicle moved through the river, the force of the current overwhelmed it and swept it away.

The tᩚraɢedy has renewed concerns about the risks of crossing rivers during the rainy season, when water levels and currents can change rapidly.

Nicaragua’s co-president, Rosario Murillo, expressed condolences to the victims’ families and warned that rivers can appear calm before suddenly becoming dangerous.

The exact circumstances of the crossing remain under investigation.

THE TRAVELER WHO WANTED TO SEE THE WORLD

Emma had built an online following by sharing glimpses of her travels, scenic destinations and life on the road.

She described herself as “your barefoot BFF” and presented a lifestyle shaped by curiosity, adventure and an appreciation for the world around her.

Her posts offered followers more than photographs of beautiful places. They also reflected her outlook on life and her belief that some of its most meaningful moments are often the smallest.

For the people who followed her journeys, her sudden dєatᩚh has brought a heartbreaking end to the story of a young woman whose online presence celebrated exploration and connection.

One of Emma’s last social media posts, shared on October 2, carried a reflection on the beauty found in ordinary moments.

“I think the most beautiful people, inside and out, are those who know how to admire the world around them,” she wrote.

She went on to describe people who notice the sky changing colour before sunset, pause to watch rain falling against a window, or smile when they hear a stranger laughing.

The words have taken on a painful new meaning following news of her dєatᩚh, with followers leaving messages of sympathy and remembrance beneath her posts.

Many expressed sorrow that her life had ended so young, while sending thoughts and condolences to those closest to her.

THREE YOUNG WOMEN, THREE LIVES LOST

Emma’s dєatᩚh alongside Noë Lina Luscher and Karen Nahomi López Montano has left families and loved ones in mourning across three countries.

Although the women came from different backgrounds, their lives were brought together during the journey in Nicaragua. Their deaths have also served as a reminder of how quickly conditions can become dangerous when heavy rain causes rivers to swell.

As investigators work to establish the full circumstances, tributes to Emma continue to focus on the life she shared with her audience: a life filled with travel, discovery and an effort to notice beauty in the world around her.

She was only 24, with so much more of the world left to see.

For those who followed her journey, her final message remains a poignant reminder to appreciate the small moments that make life meaningful.
