MOTHER, 48, AND DAUGHTER, 20, KILLED IN SUSPECTED GRIZZLY BEAR ATTACK DURING A WALK JUST MINUTES FROM HOME

Jennifer Balcarras and her daughter Selah Reed had set out for what should have been an ordinary afternoon walk along a familiar trail in British Columbia. When they failed to return, their family began a desperate search. Days later, both were found dead in what authorities believe was a suspected grizzly bear attack.

BELLA COOLA, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA — November 4, 2026

A family is facing an unimaginable loss after a mother and her daughter were found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack while walking on a familiar trail near their home in Canada.

Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her daughter Selah Reed, 20, disappeared after setting out for a casual walk along the Snooka West Trail in Bella Coola, British Columbia.

What made the tᩚraɢedy even more heartbreaking was how ordinary the outing had seemed.

The trail was only about a five-minute drive from their home. According to relatives, it was a familiar location, and the two women were accustomed to spending time outdoors.

Nobody expected that a simple walk would end in such devastating circumstances.

The family’s concern began on Saturday evening, when Jennifer failed to join an online family gathering as expected.

At first, relatives thought they might simply be delayed.

But as the hours passed without any communication, their concern grew.

Jennifer’s brother, Josh Balcarras, described the painful progression of those moments in an interview with CBC News.

“The way it starts is a few hours of not hearing from them. That turns into a day and then a night, then a second night comes and it becomes a real thing,” he recalled.

After the family could no longer reach the pair, police were contacted on Sunday morning.

Their vehicle was eventually discovered near a trailhead, prompting an extensive search involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), search-and-rescue volunteers, and British Columbia conservation officers.

On Monday, November 2, Jennifer’s remains were discovered in the Snooka West Trail area.

The search for Selah continued until Tuesday afternoon, when authorities located her remains as well.

Investigators found evidence suggesting that a bear may have been involved in the deaths.

One of the most distressing details for the family was that the women had not ventured into an unfamiliar or particularly remote wilderness area.

Jennifer and Selah knew the trail well.

Josh explained that the location was close to their home and not somewhere the family considered especially isolated.

It was simply a place where mother and daughter could enjoy the outdoors together.

The two shared a close relationship and enjoyed many of the same activities.

“When Jenny hiked, Selah was right there beside her,” Josh said.

He described them as being like “two peas in a pod.”

Their closeness made the loss particularly devastating for relatives, who are now grieving two members of the same family at once.

JENNIFER WAS A DEVOTED MOTHER AND TALENTED ART THERAPIST

Jennifer was remembered as a creative, compassionate woman who dedicated much of her life to helping others.

She worked as an art therapist and had recently moved to Bella Coola while working toward building a future in the community.

She was also a mother of four children.

Her younger brother, Matthew Balcarras, remembered how much she loved art and how she used her creativity to bring happiness to the people around her.

He recalled that she painted murals in the homes of her children and family members.

Jennifer’s work involved supporting people through art, and relatives described her as someone who had a special ability to understand and care for others.

Her family says her loss has left a tremendous void.

SELAH WAS BUILDING HER OWN FUTURE

Selah Reed was remembered as a gentle, quiet young woman with a deep love for ballet, art, and hiking.

She worked as a teaching assistant and was also pursuing university studies through online learning.

Her family described her as a kind and thoughtful person who shared many of her mother’s interests.

She enjoyed spending time outdoors and was particularly close to Jennifer.

Her life was still unfolding, with opportunities and experiences that should have been waiting for her in the years ahead.

Instead, her family is now left remembering a young woman whose future was cut tragically short.

AUTHORITIES SEARCH FOR THE BEAR RESPONSIBLE

The British Columbia Conservation Officer Service has launched an investigation into the suspected attack.

Officers have deployed traps in an effort to locate the bear potentially involved in the incident.

As of November 4, no bear had been captured.

Inspector Jeff Tyre said that if a bear is determined to be responsible, it will be killed in accordance with provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.

Authorities have also urged residents and visitors to stay away from the Snooka West Trail while the investigation continues.

The exact circumstances of the attack remain under investigation, and officials have not yet publicly confirmed the specific animal responsible.

A COMMUNITY STILL REMEMBERS ANOTHER BEAR ATTACK

The tᩚraɢedy has also reopened painful memories in Bella Coola.

Nearly one year earlier, a grizzly bear attacked a group of schoolchildren and teachers during an outdoor school trip in the same community.

Eleven people were injured in that November 2025 incident, including several children and an adult who suffered serious injuries.

The bear involved in that earlier attack was never conclusively identified.

The latest deaths have therefore brought renewed concern and grief to a community already affected by a previous encounter with a grizzly.

The Nuxalk Nation’s elected Chief, Samuel Schooner, expressed sympathy for the victims’ family and acknowledged the emotional impact the tᩚraɢedy would have on the wider community.

A FAMILY LEFT WITH TWO EMPTY PLACES

As relatives begin making funeral arrangements, a fundraiser has been established to help cover the family’s expenses.

For those who knew Jennifer and Selah, the loss is difficult to comprehend.

Jennifer was a mother who devoted herself to her family and her work helping others.

Selah was a young woman beginning to build her own future, with her mother often by her side.

They had gone out together, as they had likely done many times before.

But this time, they never returned.

Their family is now left holding on to memories of two lives that were deeply connected, two people who loved the outdoors, and a mother and daughter whose bond will never be forgotten.

What began as an ordinary walk near home has become an unimaginable tᩚraɢedy. A family has lost both a mother and her daughter, and a community is mourning two lives taken far too soon.
