Tom Skerritt, Enduring Star of ‘Alien,’ ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Picket Fences,’ diᩚєs at 93

Tom Skerritt, the versatile American actor whose steady presence and quiet authority defined memorable roles across film and television for more than six decades, has died at the age of 93. His family confirmed that he pᴀssed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from natural causes.

In a heartfelt statement, the family described both the public figure and the private man. “We are heartbroken by his loss,” they said. “While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives. He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices.”

Born in Detroit in 1933, Skerritt served four years in the U.S. Air Force before beginning his acting career in the early 1960s. His breakthrough came with Robert Altman’s 1970 war comedy M*A*S*H, in which he played the easygoing Army surgeon Captain Duke Forrest alongside Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould. The film’s success helped launch him into a long and varied career.

Near the end of the 1970s he took on one of his most iconic parts as Captain Dallas, the pragmatic commander of the spaceship Nostromo, in Ridley Scott’s 1979 science-fiction horror classic Alien. Working opposite Sigourney Weaver, John Hurt, and an exceptional ensemble, Skerritt brought a grounded, human quality to the role of a leader facing an unimaginable threat. He had initially hesitated to accept the part when the project was still low-budget and without a director attached.

In 1986 he appeared in Tony Scott’s blockbuster Top Gun as Commander Mike “Viper” Metcalf, the experienced flight instructor who guided and challenged the young pilots led by Tom Cruise’s Maverick. The character’s mix of toughness and measured respect became one of the film’s memorable supporting turns. Years later Skerritt reflected on the movie’s enduring appeal, noting that successive generations continued to discover and embrace it with the same energy as earlier audiences.

On television, Skerritt achieved one of his greatest successes as Sheriff Jimmy Brock in the CBS series Picket Fences (1992–1996). The role earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1993 and brought him wider recognition as a thoughtful, principled family man navigating the eccentricities of small-town life. He later appeared in series such as Brothers & Sisters, The West Wing, Cheers, and The Good Wife.

His filmography also includes standout performances in Steel Magnolias, A River Runs Through It, The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Zone, Contact, and Tears of the Sun. He continued working into his later years, with his final screen credit in the 2025 Western drama Broke. Beyond acting, Skerritt co-founded the Red Badge Project, an organization that helps veterans address trauma through storytelling and creative expression.

Skerritt is survived by his wife and five children, along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family has asked for privacy as they grieve and indicated that details of a memorial will be shared later.

Across science-fiction landmarks, military dramas, family stories, and character-driven television, Tom Skerritt brought a distinctive blend of quiet strength, warmth, and authenticity that resonated with audiences for generations. His body of work remains a lasting part of American film and television history.
