A community in Chicago is mourning the heartbreaking loss of seven-year-old Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, a young girl whose life ended far too soon and whose family is now facing a pain no parent should ever have to endure.
Edi Mari died on October 3, 2026, after being attacked while walking with her older sister in the Chatham neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side. She was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
The tᩚraɢedy has left her family, neighbors and people across the city struggling to understand how an ordinary morning could turn into such a devastating loss.
A FAMILY’S UNIMAGINABLE HEARTBREAK
For Edi Mari’s mother, Estefany Hernandez, the loss is deeply personal. At a community vigil, she called for justice for her daughter and spoke through her grief, reminding everyone that Edi Mari was a child who was simply going about her day.
Family members have described the devastating impact of losing a young girl who should have had years of childhood, learning and growing ahead of her.
Behind the headlines is a family whose world has changed forever — a mother grieving her daughter and loved ones trying to find the strength to face each new day.
A COMMUNITY RESPONDS
People nearby intervened during the incident and detained the suspect until police arrived. Their actions have become part of the community’s response to a tᩚraɢedy that has shaken the neighborhood.
Residents and community members have gathered to remember Edi Mari and offer support to her family. Vigils and memorial services have provided opportunities for people to come together, share their sorrow and honor the young girl’s memory.
THE INVESTIGATION AND THE SEARCH FOR JUSTICE
Police identified the suspect as 48-year-old Shavon Gayden, who has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Edi Mari’s dєatᩚh. The case is proceeding through the legal system, and the allegations must be addressed through the courts.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the attack.
As the legal process continues, Edi Mari’s family is asking for justice while trying to navigate the overwhelming reality of life without their little girl.
A LITTLE GIRL WHO WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN
No news report can fully capture a child’s life or the place she holds in her family’s heart. Edi Mari was more than the circumstances of her pᴀssing. She was a daughter, a sister and a young person whose future held so many possibilities.
Chicago’s grief reflects the profound loss felt by those who loved her and those moved by her story.
As the community continues to remember Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, one message remains at the heart of every tribute: her life mattered, her family deserves compᴀssion, and she will not be forgotten.
