RICKSHAW DRIVER CHARGED AFTER MOTHER-OF-TWO diᩚєs FOLLOWING WESTLIFE CONCERT 𝔠r𝘢sh: DANIELLE O’KEANE’S FAMILY LEFT HEARTBROKEN
A family is searching for answers after a 37-year-old mother of two tragically lost her life in a rickshaw accident while returning from a Westlife concert in Dublin.
Danielle O’Keane, from Saval, near Newry in County Down, suffered catastrophic injuries when the motorised rickshaw carrying her and three friends crashed on September 26, 2026.
She spent several days in intensive care before passing away on October 1.
Now, more than a month after the devastating incident, the case has taken a significant turn.
On Wednesday, November 4, a 37-year-old Brazilian national named Gabriel Pereira appeared before Dublin District Court after being charged in connection with Danielle’s dєatᩚh.
The development has brought renewed attention to the tragic incident and the family left behind by the young mother.
A Night Out That Ended in Unimaginable Heartbreak
Danielle had travelled to Dublin with three female friends to attend a concert by the internationally famous Irish boyband Westlife at the 3Arena.
It was supposed to be a special evening away from the responsibilities of everyday family life.
After the concert, the four women boarded a motorised rickshaw at North Wall Quay, intending to travel into Dublin city centre and meet Danielle’s husband, Dave, along with the other women’s partners.
But their journey took a devastating turn.
At approximately 11 p.m. on September 26, the rickshaw was involved in a serious 𝔠r𝘢sh.
According to information presented in court, the driver was allegedly travelling in a cycle lane before attempting a manoeuvre to merge into traffic.
The vehicle struck a concrete bollard, causing Danielle to fall beneath the carriage and suffer catastrophic injuries, prosecutors alleged.
Other reports described the rickshaw clipping a divider between the cycle lane and the main road before overturning.
The emergency services were called, and Danielle was rushed by ambulance to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
One of the other women travelling in the vehicle also suffered injuries, including a broken nose, broken teeth and a minor head injury.
Doctors Delivered Devastating News to Her Family
At the hospital, Danielle’s injuries were found to be extremely serious.
Her family later revealed that she had suffered what was described as a life-ending brain injury.
She remained under intensive medical care as her loved ones desperately hoped for a recovery.
But the situation was heartbreaking.
After several days in hospital, Danielle passed away on October 1, leaving behind her husband, Dave, and their two young sons, Caolán and Cillian.
She was just 37 years old.
For her family, the loss was particularly devastating because the concert had been intended as a rare opportunity for Danielle to enjoy an evening with friends.
Her sister-in-law, Ashling O’Keane, previously explained that the night out was a rare occasion for Danielle to go out and enjoy herself.
The family had also reportedly been looking forward to a holiday in Mallorca with her husband and children, which would have been their first family holiday together.
Instead, they were left facing a future without her.
Westlife Reached Out to the Heartbroken Family
News of the accident and Danielle’s condition also reached Westlife.
During the days when she remained in intensive care, the band reportedly contacted her family to offer their support.
The gesture was a source of comfort during an incredibly difficult period.
For the family, the concert that had begun as a joyful evening had become forever associated with a devastating loss.
Tributes also poured in from friends and people who knew Danielle.
One friend, Cathy Cunningham, described her as an amazing woman who would be terribly missed.
Another friend, Niamh McCann, remembered her as someone who was the best of them.
Their messages reflected the profound impact Danielle had on the people around her.
Rickshaw Driver Charged in Connection With Her dєatᩚh
On November 4, the case reached an important legal development.
Gabriel Pereira, 37, a Brazilian national living in Dublin, appeared before Judge Michèle Finan at Dublin District Court.
He faces two charges arising from the September 26 incident.
The first is dangerous driving causing the dєatᩚh of Danielle O’Keane.
The second concerns allegedly endangering the lives of the three other women travelling in the rickshaw.
According to evidence presented by Garda Sergeant Mark O’Neill, when the first charge was put to Pereira, he replied:
“I don’t think I did.”
He gave no response when the second charge was presented.
The court also heard that Pereira had arrived in Ireland on a travel visa just eight days before the incident.
Prosecutors raised concerns about the possibility that he might leave the country, while the defence argued that he had cooperated with Gardaí and was entitled to the presumption of innocence.
His lawyer also stressed that the incident was tragic but that the allegation concerned recklessness rather than intentional wrongdoing.
Court Grants Bail Under Strict Conditions
Judge Michèle Finan granted bail subject to several strict conditions.
These include a €20,000 independent surety, meaning an approved person must provide financial security before his release.
The accused must remain in custody until the surety is approved.
If released, he must:
- Live at his current registered address.
- Report to Store Street Garda Station twice every day.
- Observe a nightly curfew between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
- Provide a contact telephone number available around the clock.
- Apply for any travel documents.
- Refrain from driving any motor vehicle.
He was remanded in custody with consent to bail on these conditions and is due to appear again at Cloverhill District Court on November 11, 2026.
The proceedings remain ongoing, and no finding of guilt has been made.
A Husband and Two Young Sons Left Behind
While the legal process continues, Danielle’s family must find a way to navigate life without someone who meant so much to them.
She was remembered in her dєatᩚh notice as the much-loved wife of Dave and devoted mother of Caolán and Cillian.
She was also a beloved daughter, sister and friend.
Her dєatᩚh has left an enormous gap in the lives of those who knew her.
The two young boys have lost their mother, while her husband has been left to face the unimaginable challenge of raising their children without his partner.
A fundraiser was also launched to support Danielle’s family following the tᩚraɢedy, attracting significant public support.
For those who loved her, the memories of their mother, wife, daughter and friend will remain.
A Tragic Reminder of How Quickly Life Can Change
Danielle’s story began with a night of music, friendship and excitement.
She had gone to see one of Ireland’s most beloved musical groups, expecting to return home to her family after a memorable evening.
Instead, one devastating journey changed everything.
As the investigation and court proceedings continue, her loved ones are left remembering a woman whose life was cut short at just 37.
Behind the headlines is a husband who lost his wife, two young boys who lost their mother, and a family whose lives will never be the same.
May Danielle O’Keane rest in peace.
Our thoughts are with Dave, Caolán, Cillian and everyone who loved her.
