MISSING 6-YEAR-OLD BOY WITH AUTISM FOUND SAFE AFTER SEARCHERS SING HIS FAVORITE SONG — THEN HE WALKED OUT OF THE WOODS SAYING “E-I-E-I-O HORSEY”

A heartwarming reunion unfolded in Kentucky after a 6-year-old boy who had been missing for nearly three days was found safe in a wooded area, thanks to the determination of hundreds of searchers — and an unusual idea involving music and horses.

Roman Heilman, a young boy with autism from Louisa, Kentucky, was reported missing on Sunday afternoon, November 1, after he was last seen near his home on Tadpole Road.

His disappearance triggered an extensive search involving law enforcement officers, emergency responders and hundreds of volunteers who joined forces to bring him home.

As the search continued, the National Autism Association shared an important suggestion: searchers should sing one of Roman’s favorite songs, “If You’re Happy and You Know It,” in the hope that he might recognize the familiar tune and respond.

The advice offered a different approach to reaching a child who might not respond to conventional calls or instructions.

Among those who joined the effort was Louisa resident Jacob Mullins, an experienced horse trail rider.

Mullins told the Lexington Herald-Leader that a friend contacted him on Monday, November 2, with a simple message: “Let’s take off work and go find this kid.”

The following morning, Mullins and a group of fellow riders headed into the surrounding woods before daylight.

“There was about 10 of us,” he recalled. “We were all on horses in the woods before daylight. And we rode the horses a total of 14-plus miles, trekking around trying to find him.”

The difficult search took the volunteers across wooded trails and rugged terrain as they continued looking for any sign of the missing child.

Then, on Tuesday, November 3, their efforts finally paid off.

Mullins said the group was approximately a mile and a half from Roman’s home when the little boy suddenly emerged from the bushes and approached a horse trail.

Rather than calling out for help, Roman reportedly began saying, “E-I-E-I-O horsey.”

The unexpected words immediately caught the searchers’ attention.

It was a remarkable moment after days of uncertainty, as the volunteers finally located the child they had been desperately trying to find.

According to Mullins, Roman also had a small dog with him.

Despite the challenging conditions, the boy appeared to be in relatively good condition. He had some scratches from briars and was dehydrated, but otherwise seemed to be doing well.

The volunteers gave him a banana and some water before carefully preparing to bring him down from the wooded area.

“We wrapped him up in a sweatshirt, put him on the horse and started bringing him off the mountain,” Mullins said.

Roman was subsequently checked by medical personnel, according to the National Autism Association.

HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE CAME TOGETHER TO BRING HIM HOME

The search for Roman had brought together people from across the surrounding community.

Kentucky State Police confirmed on November 3 that the 6-year-old had been found safe, expressing gratitude to local, state and federal partners, as well as the hundreds of volunteers who assisted.

The operation involved extensive searches across difficult terrain, with specialized ground teams, aircraft, drones and other emergency resources helping searchers cover the area.

Officials had also urged residents to remain alert and check their properties while the search was underway.

The National Autism Association later recognized the extraordinary community response in a message thanking everyone who had helped.

“Thank you to the hundreds of volunteers, first responders, and everyone who shared his flier and sang his song in the woods. This community showed up for Roman,” the organization said.

A COMMUNITY’S DETERMINATION MADE THE DIFFERENCE

For Roman’s family, the days between his disappearance and his safe return were undoubtedly filled with uncertainty.

But the response from the community demonstrated how people can come together when a child needs help.

From volunteers riding horses through the woods to emergency personnel coordinating a large-scale search, hundreds of people contributed their time and effort.

And in the end, a familiar song, the sound of horses and the persistence of strangers all became part of the story of Roman’s safe return.

What began as an urgent search ended with a little boy being carried home safely — and a community reminded of the extraordinary power of compassion and collective effort.
