The Quiet Young Man Who Climbed Two Fences Alone: Family Tribute and Inquest Reveal the Hidden Battle Behind William Chapman’s Final Hours

William Harry Bruce Chapman, the 24-year-old self-employed online trader from Doncaster, was described by those who knew him as polite, well-spoken and carefully kept, a young man who could hold a conversation about Formula One for hours and who had arrived in the city seeking a fresh start after earlier years that included childhood acting work. On the afternoon of 10 October 2026 he visited Yorkshire Wildlife Park alone, wearing headphones and pacing near the Land of the Tigers enclosure before climbing two fences and entering the area occupied by Altai, a roughly 200-kilogram Amur tiger. Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes told Doncaster Coroner’s Court that he was approached by the tiger, that physical contact followed, and that the resulting multiple traumatic injuries rapidly led to his dєatᩚh; paramedics confirmed he had died at the scene after park staff secured the animal. An initial post-mortem examination recorded the provisional cause as multiple traumatic injuries arising from animal interaction, with a fuller report still awaited when the inquest was formally opened on 15 October and then adjourned until 18 March 2027.

In a statement issued days after the dєatᩚh, Chapman’s family called him a bright, warm and engaging young man whom they dearly loved and who loved them in return. They acknowledged that he had suffered from significant mєntal illness over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication, adding that it would be for the coroner to decide what part that history played. They also said they were utterly devastated, struggling to come to terms with what had happened, and distressed by the circulation of deeply offensive media content; they asked people to stop sharing it and expressed hope that the relevant authorities would establish why he had done what he did. Senior coroner Nicola Mundy noted that the family had chosen not to attend the opening hearing because they were finding things incredibly difficult; they were to be updated by staff afterwards. The same hearing recorded that Chapman had a diagnosis of schizophrenia, had experienced previous bouts of psychosis, and was under the care of adult mєntal health services provided by the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust. Despite those diagnoses he was described as highly functioning and independent with no care requirements at the time of his dєatᩚh. Family members had already expressed a number of concerns about the nature of his contact with those services in the period leading up to 10 October; the trust has commissioned an independent patient-safety investigation while stating that it will respect patient confidentiality.

Neighbours who shared his block of flats in Doncaster city centre from July 2026 onward recalled a young man who kept largely to himself yet could hold a normal conversation and appeared capable of looking after himself. One described him as a lovely man who was quite well kept. Born in Chichester, West SusSєx, in 2002, Chapman had earlier attended Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe and appeared as a child actor in ITV’s May Contain Nuts and in a BBC True Stories episode portraying the young Edward Jenner. By the time of the park visit he was living independently and working as an online trader. Eyewitnesses at the park that Saturday afternoon saw him pacing near the elevated walkway that overlooks the two tiger paddocks; some mobile-phone footage, believed to have been recorded by Chapman himself, shows him moving across grᴀss inside the enclosure toward the tiger. South Yorkshire Police gathered statements from visitors and staff. City of Doncaster Council, the licensing authority, has opened a health-and-safety investigation whose outcome will be shared with the coroner. The park itself has continued to ᴀssist all inquiries while providing trauma support to its own staff.

The contrast between the description of a highly functioning, independent young man and the decision to scale two fences into a large-cat enclosure has left many questions open. The full inquest in March 2027 is expected to examine the sequence of events at the park, any prior visits, available CCTV, the extent of the injuries, toxicology results already being prepared, and the history of mєntal-health contact. Until then the family’s request for privacy and respectful coverage remains in force, while the provisional medical findings and the park’s confirmation that Altai was secured unharmed continue to define the narrow set of established facts. What is already clear is that a 24-year-old who was remembered as warm and engaging, who lived alone in Doncaster after earlier years that included both acting and illness, entered the enclosure alone around 13:30 BST and did not leave it alive.
