Nearly Three Decades After Christmas Night in Boulder, New DNA Work and Interviews Are Quietly Moving the JonBenét Ramsey Investigation Forward

Nearly thirty years after six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colorado home on the morning of December 26, 1996, Boulder police continue to describe the investigation as an active top priority. In its annual public update released in December 2025, Police Chief Stephen Redfearn stated that detectives had conducted several new interviews, re-interviewed individuals based on incoming tips, collected new evidence, and tested or re-tested existing pieces of evidence using evolving DNA technology in an effort to generate fresh leads.

The department has not released specifics on what was examined or who was questioned, citing the need to protect the integrity of the ongoing work. Redfearn has publicly directed the department to leave no stone unturned, to consult outside experts and partner agencies, and to pursue technological advances as they become available. John Ramsey, JonBenét’s father, has described the recent activity and the change in leadership as encouraging. He has met with Chief Redfearn on multiple occasions and has said the new approach feels more open than the long period that preceded it.

Ramsey has repeatedly advocated for the use of forensic genetic genealogy on the unidentified male DNA profile recovered from JonBenét’s clothing in the early stages of the investigation. That profile has never matched anyone in public databases and has long been viewed by some investigators and the family as one of the most significant pieces of remaining evidence. Primary DNA analysis in the case was performed by an outside laboratory rather than the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, a distinction that has taken on added relevance amid later developments at the state lab.

As the thirtieth anniversary approaches, police have continued to urge anyone with information, no matter how small or how long ago, to come forward. The case remains officially unsolved, with no one ever charged. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006; the remaining family members were cleared by the district attorney’s office in 2008. Public interest has never fully faded, and the combination of new interviews, evidence re-testing, and advances in DNA methods has produced cautious optimism among those closest to the investigation that additional answers remain possible.
