Christa Gail Pike was expected to be executed in Tennessee on September 30, 2026. Instead, the 50-year-old woman survived the state’s attempt and was taken to a hospital in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition, triggering an investigation into what went wrong inside the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber.

Pike had been sentenced to d#ath for the 1995 mu#der of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, a crime committed when Pike was 18. She had been scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than two centuries.

The exє𝔠uti☉n attempt was already surrounded by legal uncertainty. A federal appeals court temporarily halted the procedure less than an hour before it was scheduled to begin, but the U.S. Supreme Court later lifted that stay, allowing Tennessee to proceed.

Once the procedure began, however, the expected outcome did not occur.

According to Pike’s attorneys and media witnesses, Tennessee administered two doses of pentobarbital, yet Pike remained alive. Witnesses reported hearing her breathing after the doses had been given, and she was eventually transported by ambulance to a hospital rather than leaving the prison as authorities had expected.

New details released Friday provided a clearer picture of Pike’s condition. Her attorneys said she remained unconscious and was receiving ᴀssistance from a ventilator. They also alleged that problems with intravenous access may have prevented the drug from entering her bloodstream as intended.

Those claims remain allegations from Pike’s legal team and are now part of the investigation. Tennessee officials have not publicly confirmed that this was the definitive cause of the failure.

The Tennessee Department of Correction has maintained that officials followed the state’s established exє𝔠uti☉n protocol, which had been approved by the Attorney General’s Office. The department also said the chemical used in the protocol had previously been effective.

Gov. Bill Lee has nevertheless ordered a comprehensive independent review of the incident and halted Tennessee’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026 while officials investigate what happened.

Pike’s attorneys are now asking that her sentence be commuted. They have also filed an emergency request seeking preservation of evidence from the failed procedure, arguing that the events raise serious consтιтutional and medical questions.

The incident is particularly significant because the dєatᩚh Penalty Information Center said Pike is the first known person to survive after receiving lєthaℓ-inje𝔠ti☉n drugs intended to carry out an exє𝔠uti☉n.
