Aileen Wuornos Has Been ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Since 2002. The New Series Puts Her Face Back in the Room.

Investigation Discovery did not pick Aileen Wuornos because the technology was ready for a demonstration. Executive producer Stephen Dost, vice president of content at Arrow Media, has said the company already knew a digital-mask tool existed, a process he calls really advanced motion capture, and held it until a story justified looking straight at a real person. The question was narrow: if you could show someone as they were at the time, what story would make sense? Wuornos kept returning. Dost has said that if you look at her face, you can see the suffering behind it, the 𝘢bu𝘴e she went through, a life that can almost be read on the surface. That is the premise of the three-part series Unmasking a Monster: Aileen Wuornos, which premiered on Investigation Discovery on September 30, 2026, and streams on HBO Max. An AI-based digital mask turns actress Morag Peacock into a close visual likeness of Wuornos, then does the same for nine other actors playing real people tied to the case. Dost has called this use a first for the industry.

The constraint was footage. Usable archival images of Wuornos are very limited, and ordinary true-crime reenactments have spent years hiding faces, śh́óóting past a shoulder, or keeping the performer abstract so the audience will not reject the stand-in. Jason Sarlanis, president of Investigation Discovery, has said audiences now want realism and access to the truth behind these stories, and that reenactments, part of the genre from the start, have also been an obstacle to believability. Digital prosthetics, in his framing, let viewers into key moments with a level of authenticity older staging could not reach. Dost put the change more directly. In a traditional reenactment you avoid the face. Here the point was to look right at her, uncomfortably, at the humanity that was there.

The mask is not a generated person. Kyran Speirs, head of post-production at Arrow Media, has described a model built from real archival video and pH๏τographs that captured Wuornos from every angle, then layered with AI over the actress’s performance as a three-dimensional mask. Dost has told USA Today to think of it as translating one for one everything the performer does, as if the set had an extraordinary prosthetic and wig, except that makeup cannot rewrite bone structure. The production needed a face already close to Wuornos’. Peacock’s was.

About ninety minutes of hair, makeup, and one prosthetic tooth got her to camera. After that she played mannerisms, quirks, and the way Wuornos used her eyes. Dost has said that at the end of takes, before any effects were visible, the room could go quiet enough to hear a pin drop, because it already felt like being in the room with Aileen Wuornos. The series uses that proximity for jail calls, interrogation testimony, and childhood recollections built from transcripts, police records, and interview memory.
