Learjet 60’s Troubled Safety History Comes Under Fresh Scrutiny After Florida 𝔠r𝘢sh Kills Nine

The diᩚadℓy 𝔠r𝘢sh of a Learjet 60 in Florida has brought renewed attention to the aircraft’s decades-long history, including previous fatal accidents, serious mechanical concerns and safety changes introduced after a major investigation.

The business jet, once celebrated for its speed and performance, has also faced questions about its design and maintenance requirements. Now, following the November 1 𝔠r𝘢sh that killed nine people near Greenacres, investigators are examining whether the aircraft’s history could offer important clues.

The Bombardier Learjet 60 was introduced in the early 1990s as a midsize business jet designed for private and charter travel. It became popular among corporate executives and wealthy passengers because of its ability to fly quickly between major destinations.

However, its record has not been without serious incidents.

A diᩚadℓy 2008 accident exposed significant safety problems

One of the most consequential accidents involving the Learjet 60 happened on September 19, 2008, at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in South Carolina.

A Learjet 60 operated by Global Exec Aviation overran the runway during an aborted takeoff. The captain, first officer and two passengers were killed, while two other passengers suffered serious injuries.

The National Transportation Safety Board conducted an extensive investigation and identified several safety issues involving the aircraft.

Investigators found that tire inflation and maintenance practices played a ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal role in the accident. The investigation also identified deficiencies in the thrust-reverser system, shortcomings in safety analyses and problems involving pilot training for tire-failure emergencies.

The NTSB concluded that the captain’s decision to reject the takeoff after the aircraft had passed its designated decision speed contributed to the disaster.

The findings prompted safety recommendations and changes to maintenance and operating procedures. The FAA subsequently introduced mandatory requirements concerning tire-pressure checks for affected Learjet 60 aircraft.

The accident became an important chapter in the model’s safety history, demonstrating how seemingly routine maintenance issues and emergency procedures could have devastating consequences.

Other serious accidents involving the aircraft

The 2008 disaster was not the only fatal accident involving a Learjet 60.

In May 2013, a Learjet 60 crashed while approaching Valencia Airport in Venezuela, 𝘬iᩚlling both pilots.

Other recorded accidents involving the model include runway overruns, landing incidents and aircraft damage at airports in the United States and other countries.

A review of aviation occurrence records covering 1996 through 2023 identified 14 recorded accidents and incidents involving the Learjet 60 family, including one fatal occurrence during that period. These figures do not include the November 2026 Florida disaster.

Importantly, the number of recorded incidents alone cannot establish whether the Learjet 60 is more dangerous than comparable business jets. A meaningful comparison would also need to account for fleet size, total flight hours, aircraft age and operating conditions.

Why the Learjet 60 has attracted safety concerns

The aircraft’s history has highlighted several areas that require careful attention.

Its landing system, including its brakes and tires, has been discussed in aviation safety reporting. The 2008 investigation also revealed how tire failures could interact with the aircraft’s thrust-reverser system and emergency procedures.

Aviation analysts have described the Learjet 60 as an aircraft that demands disciplined operation and careful maintenance.

That does not mean every Learjet 60 is unsafe. The model received regulatory certification, and individual aircraft must continue to meet applicable maintenance, inspection and airworthiness requirements throughout their service lives.

The aircraft’s production ended in 2013, but many examples remain in operation.

The Florida 𝔠r𝘢sh raises new questions

The latest disaster occurred on November 1, 2026, when Learjet 60 N722BD crashed near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, Florida.

The aircraft was operating a charter flight from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas, carrying two pilots and seven passengers.

All nine people aboard were killed.

Among the victims were captain Jeffrey Gregory, 55, and co-pilot Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20. The passengers included technology entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children and other members of their group.

Before the 𝔠r𝘢sh, the crew reported light clear icing and moderate turbulence while flying at approximately 35,000 feet.

They requested permission to climb to 37,000 feet. Less than 30 seconds after receiving approval, the crew declared an emergency as the aircraft entered a rapid descent.

The co-pilot reported an overspeed condition and descent rates reaching approximately 20,000 feet per minute.

Investigators have also recovered aircraft components from locations away from the main impact site, providing evidence that at least some parts may have separated before the aircraft struck the ground.

The NTSB is examining the weather, aircraft systems, maintenance records, recovered wreckage and flight crew communications.

A history worth examining, but no cause established

The Learjet 60’s past includes documented safety problems, particularly those uncovered during the investigation of the 2008 Columbia accident.

But those historical findings do not prove that the same problems caused the Florida 𝔠r𝘢sh.

Investigators have not announced whether the latest disaster involved a mechanical failure, severe weather, an aerodynamic upset or a combination of factors.

For now, the aircraft’s history provides important context rather than a definitive explanation.

The families of the nine victims are still waiting for answers, while investigators continue examining the wreckage to determine what happened during the Learjet’s final moments.
