How a Learjet Began to Break Apart Miles Above Palm Beach County: The Emerging Clues in a Catastrophic Plunge

Investigators examining the November 1 Learjet 60 𝔠r𝘢sh in Palm Beach County have established that at least one ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal control surface separated from the aircraft while it was still airborne. National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman said the majority of the left elevator was recovered in three pieces between 1.3 and 3.8 miles from the primary impact crater on Military Trail. Because the fragments lay that far from the main wreckage, Chapman said it was implausible they had been produced solely by ground impact.

The elevator is the movable surface on the horizontal stabilizer that allows pilots to raise or lower the nose. Chapman noted that once it was gone the crew would have been unable to recover from a steep dive, and that at the extreme speeds the jet had already reached the surface might not have been effective even if it had remained attached. What remains undetermined is the sequence: whether loss of the elevator helped trigger the upset or whether the forces generated by an already-developing high-speed descent tore the surface free.

The 2004 Learjet 60, registration N722BD and operated by Aurora Aviation doing business as Upper Jets, had been cruising near 35,000 feet when the crew first reported conditions. They described light clear ice as manageable, moderate turbulence producing alтιтude excursions of several hundred feet, and an outside temperature of roughly minus 47 degrees Celsius. Clearance was given for a climb to 37,000 feet. Almost immediately afterward first officer Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras declared an emergency as descent rates climbed past 20,000 feet per minute while the jet was in an overspeed condition.

Tracking data recorded a drop from approximately 35,250 feet to 8,750 feet in little more than a minute. Early on-scene briefings indicated evidence of in-flight breakup, and weather—including the reported icing and the presence of a stronger thunderstorm cell in the vicinity—remains a central focus of the investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the inquiry under case ERA27MA026, with a preliminary report expected within weeks.
