Couple Who Endured Multiple Miscarriages Lose Their Dream Daughter, 2, in Heartbreaking Fifth-Floor Window tᩚraɢedy

A New York couple who endured multiple miscarriages before welcoming their long-awaited daughter are facing unimaginable grief after the two-year-old died in a fall from their fifth-floor apartment window in the Bronx.

Little Julia Wilcox-Polanco died on Tuesday night, November 3, after falling from the family’s apartment in the Mott Haven neighborhood.

According to police, the toddler managed to remove the plastic accordion-style panels surrounding a window air-conditioning unit before squeezing through the opening and falling into a concrete alleyway below.

Her mother, Thessa Wilcox, was inside the apartment when the tᩚraɢedy unfolded. She said she had briefly stepped into another room and noticed on the baby monitor that Julia had disappeared.

“I saw on the monitor she wasn’t there and I went to run back and she was not. She was gone and she was out the window,” Wilcox told reporters.

The child’s father, Chayanne Polanco, was not home at the time. He said he initially struggled to believe the phone call informing him about the accident.

“I thought it was a hoax. I thought it was someone else,” he recalled.

Building superintendent Jose Sosa was among the first people to reach Julia after the fall. He said he found the little girl lying face down and tried desperately to help her.

Emergency responders rushed Julia to Harlem Hospital in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition, but she died from her injuries.

A daughter they waited so long to welcome

The loss has been especially devastating for the couple because Julia was born after years of trying to start a family and enduring multiple miscarriages.

Her parents described her as an energetic, loving and spirited little girl who brought happiness into their lives.

They had recently celebrated Halloween with Julia, taking her trick-or-treating for the first time. Her mother said she was grateful that her daughter had the opportunity to experience the holiday and see the excitement of the neighborhood.

Now, those memories have become some of the family’s most painful reminders of what they have lost.

Wilcox said she has been so overwhelmed by grief that she has struggled to leave her bed.

“I can’t believe it’s real. I can’t believe she’s gone,” she said.

Questions about apartment window safety

The tᩚraɢedy has also raised concerns about the safety of the apartment’s windows and the installation of the air-conditioning unit.

The family said they installed the unit themselves. Building superintendent Sosa told reporters that the plastic side panels appeared to have been secured with tape.

Julia’s parents also said that some windows in their apartment had protective window guards, but the window involved in the accident did not.

New York City regulations require window guards in qualifying residential buildings when children under the age of 10 live in an apartment. The family has raised questions about whether adequate safety protections were in place.

The parents also said they had previously sought help regarding window safety concerns. However, city records reviewed by CBS News did not show window-guard complaints filed between 2020 and the time of the incident.

The city’s Department of Health said it was investigating the fatal fall and emphasized the importance of properly installed window guards and air-conditioning safety devices.

Police have said they do not suspect criminal activity, and the investigation remains ongoing.

A heartbreaking message from grieving parents

As the family prepares to lay Julia to rest, her father has urged other parents not to take even a single moment with their children for granted.

“Hold ’em. Hold ’em. Love ’em. Because you may never know when they’re gone,” Polanco said. “Make sure you tell them you love them every night. Make sure you hold them.”

The family hopes to bring Julia to South Dakota, where she will be buried on her relatives’ burial land. A fundraising campaign was established to help cover funeral and transportation expenses.

For Chayanne Polanco and Thessa Wilcox, Julia was the little girl they had waited years to hold in their arms. Now, their story has become a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly a family’s life can change.
