🚨 COCO GAUFF HIT WITH RACIST 𝘢bu𝘴e AFTER CHINA OPEN CONTROVERSY — “I’M NOT A CHEATER OR A THIEF”

SEO Title: Coco Gauff Condemns Racist 𝘢bu𝘴e After China Open Controversy

Meta Description: Coco Gauff faced racist online 𝘢bu𝘴e after a disputed point against China’s Sun Xinran at the China Open. Here is what happened and why the controversy escalated.

Coco Gauff went to Beijing to compete. Instead, one disputed point at the China Open triggered an online controversy that quickly went far beyond tennis.

After defeating Chinese teenager Sun Xinran in straight sets, the American star said she had received an “insane” amount of racist comments and direct messages. Her response was direct: fans could disagree with her actions, she said, without resorting to racism. <Cite refs={[“turn709358news12″,”turn709358search0”]}/>

But what happened during the match — and why did one decision provoke such a fierce reaction?

The Point That Sparked the Controversy

The incident occurred on October 5 during Gauff’s third-round match against 16-year-old Sun at the China Open in Beijing.

Late in the first set, Gauff stopped playing after noticing that the electronic advertising boards beside the court had flickered. Sun appeared to be in position to hit a potentially winning shot when Gauff raised her hand to halt the rally.

The chair umpire reviewed the incident on video and ruled that the distraction justified replaying the point. Gauff won the replay and went on to secure a 7–5, 6–1 victory. <Cite refs={[“turn709358search1″,”turn709358search3”]}/>

The decision became the focus of criticism online, with some viewers accusing Gauff of unfairly interrupting the rally.

Gauff pushed back against those accusations, explaining that players can request a review when an outside distraction interferes with play. She maintained that she had followed the rules rather than deliberately seeking an advantage.

Gauff’s Response: Disagreement Is Not an Excuse for Racism

Following the match, Gauff addressed the 𝘢bu𝘴e on social media.

“You can dislike me or disagree about what happened without being racist,” she wrote, describing the volume of racist comments and direct messages as “insane.”

She also rejected accusations that she had cheated or stolen a point. Her response drew attention to the difference between legitimate debate over an umpire’s decision and personal attacks based on race. <Cite refs={[“turn709358search0″,”turn709358search2”]}/>

The controversy was not simply about whether the point should have been replayed. It also raised questions about how quickly online sports criticism can escalate into targeted 𝘢bu𝘴e.

What Gauff Said About Sun Xinran

Gauff also acknowledged the difficult position Sun found herself in during the match.

The American said she had apologized to Sun after the contest and that the young player understood the situation. Gauff praised Sun’s talent and expressed sympathy for her emotional reaction, describing the experience as the beginning of what could be an impressive career. <Cite refs={[“turn709358search3″,”turn709358search7”]}/>

That response offered another side to a story increasingly dominated by online arguments. Gauff defended her own actions while also showing respect for the teenager across the net.

A Bigger Problem for Professional Tennis

Online 𝘢bu𝘴e directed at tennis players has become a growing concern across the sport. The WTA has introduced monitoring measures designed to identify abusive messages targeting players and officials.

A report cited by multiple news outlets found that more than 12,000 abusive social media posts and messages targeted players and officials in 2025, underscoring the scale of the problem. <Cite refs={[“turn709358search2″,”turn709358search7”]}/>

The China Open incident illustrates how a disputed call can become a flashpoint. Fans can debate whether an umpire made the right decision, but racist attacks do not resolve questions about the rules or the fairness of a match.

Gauff’s victory over Sun was official. The replay decision was made by the chair umpire after a review. The subsequent racist 𝘢bu𝘴e, however, became a separate issue that extended well beyond the court.

One disputed point ignited the debate. The 𝘢bu𝘴e that followed made the stakes much bigger. Can tennis protect open criticism of decisions while drawing a firm line against racism?
