Missing 6-Year-Old Boy Found Alive in Kentucky Mountains After Nearly 48 Hours as Rescuers Hear His Unexpected Words

A six-year-old boy who vanished from his Kentucky home was found alive after nearly two days in rugged mountain terrain, bringing an emotional end to a massive search involving hundreds of rescuers and volunteers.
Roman Heilman, an autistic boy who is nonverbal, disappeared from his family’s home on Tadpole Road in Louisa, Kentucky, at around 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 1.
His disappearance triggered an IAN Alert, a special emergency notification used in Kentucky to help locate missing children with autism or mєntal health conditions who may be in danger.
Kentucky State Police and local emergency crews quickly organized an extensive search, with hundreds of volunteers joining the effort. Teams used drones, helicopters, rescue dogs and horseback riders to comb through the surrounding wilderness.
The search was especially challenging because the area was covered in thick vegetation, steep hills, ponds and cliffs. Temperatures and changing weather conditions also added to concerns about the child’s safety.
Searchers discovered several clues that suggested Roman had traveled into the hills, including muddy footprints, followed by his jacket and pants. His small dog was also believed to be missing alongside him.
Because Roman was known to respond to familiar songs, volunteers were encouraged to sing children’s songs while searching. Teams reportedly sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It” in the hope that he might hear and recognize their voices.
On Tuesday morning, November 3, drone technology helped identify a possible heat signature in a difficult-to-reach area. Horseback searchers were then sent into the mountains, where conventional vehicles could not easily travel.
One seemingly insignificant discovery helped lead them closer to the boy: a discarded sucker wrapper on the ground.
The volunteers followed the trail and soon spotted Roman’s small dog emerging from the bushes. Moments later, the little boy appeared.
Rather than crying or calling for help, Roman reportedly approached the horses and said something that left rescuers with an unforgettable memory.
“E-I-E-I-O horsey,” he said.
He was found approximately 1.5 miles from his home, accompanied by his dog. Reports described him as being without clothes, with scratches believed to have been caused by thorny vegetation.
Rescuers immediately gave him water and food, wrapped him in a sweatshirt and carefully brought him down the mountain.
Despite spending nearly two days outdoors, Roman was in relatively good condition. Officials said he was dehydrated and had several scratches, but had no broken bones or other major injuries reported.
Lawrence County Emergency Management Director Travis Hughes described the successful rescue as nothing short of a miracle.
He praised the hundreds of people who contributed to the search, from emergency responders and horseback volunteers to community members who provided food, water and other assistance.

The Kentucky State Police also thanked the agencies and volunteers whose efforts helped bring Roman home safely.
For his family, the discovery brought an overwhelming sense of relief after days of uncertainty and fear. What began as a desperate search through dangerous mountain terrain ended with a little boy walking out of the bushes and greeting the rescuers who had been searching tirelessly for him.
