NYC Stabbing Survivor Vomits After Hearing Attacker’s Sentence for 22 Knife Wounds

A New York woman who survived being stabbed 22 times was left so overwhelmed by anger and distress that she vomited after hearing the sentence handed to the man who nearly killed her.
Kaitlynn Berman, a mother from the Bronx, faced her attacker, Christopher Joseph, 23, in court on Wednesday, November 4, as he was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for the brutal 2025 attack.
Berman had hoped he would receive a much longer sentence. Instead, the punishment left her and her supporters devastated.
The attack happened on March 22, 2025, inside Berman’s apartment in the Wakefield neighborhood. Joseph was an acquaintance whom she had been trying to get to leave her home when he allegedly pulled out a kitchen knife and repeatedly stabbed her.
Berman said the attack happened in front of her three-year-old daughter, who was in another room.
Police said Joseph also stole her cellphone and nearly $6,000 in cash before leaving. He was arrested the following day.
Berman spent weeks in the hospital undergoing multiple surgeries and treatment. Despite surviving the attack, she continues to suffer permanent nerve damage, chronic pain and lasting trauma. She has also described serious injuries affecting her face and vision.
Joseph eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder on September 16, admitting that he had tried to 𝘬iᩚll Berman.
At Wednesday’s sentencing, the court imposed eight and a half years in prison, followed by five years of post-release supervision. An order of protection was also issued to prevent Joseph from contacting her.
But the sentence was far shorter than the punishment Berman believed was appropriate.
She had previously said that 22 years would be fair, with one year for every time she was stabbed.
After the hearing, victim advocate Bishop Boyde Singletary described the emotional impact of the decision.
“We are not satisfied. She is not satisfied,” he said, adding that Berman was so overwhelmed by the outcome that she vomited.
He also highlighted the lasting physical and psychological consequences of the attack, saying her life had been permanently changed.
Joseph declined to address the court during sentencing.
The case had already drawn attention after Joseph was released without bail in December 2025 because of a missed legal deadline. Berman had previously spoken publicly about her fear while he was free, saying she did not feel safe going outside alone.
Now that the sentencing has concluded, Berman’s supporters say they intend to continue raising concerns about the punishment with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.

For a woman who survived 22 knife wounds and spent weeks fighting to recover, the courtroom decision brought another painful moment in a case that has already changed her life.
