Elderly Driver, 76, Accused of Plowing Into 30 Cyclists in North Carolina, 𝘬iᩚlling One and Injuring 20 Others

A morning cycling outing turned into a diᩚadℓy disaster in North Carolina after a sedan crossed into a group of around 30 cyclists, 𝘬iᩚlling one person and leaving at least 20 others injured.

The 𝔠r𝘢sh happened shortly after 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, along Optimist Farm Road in Wake County, near Holly Springs. Authorities say the vehicle crossed the center line and struck the riders before continuing down the road and crashing into a ditch roughly half a mile away.

The driver was identified as 76-year-old Donald Robert Morris-Jones, of Apex, North Carolina. He was taken into custody as investigators examined whether impairment played a role in the collision.

Cyclists Struck During Saturday Morning Ride

The group was made up of members of the Capital Cycling Club, who were riding together along the two-lane road.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the sedan crossed the center line and struck the cyclists. The vehicle then continued away from the initial collision site before leaving the roadway and crashing into a ditch.

Emergency crews arrived to find a devastating scene. One cyclist was pronounced dead, while around 20 others were injured and taken to hospitals.

Seven of the injured riders were transported to trauma centers, while others were treated for injuries described as less severe.

The cyclist who died was identified as 63-year-old Patrick Turner, of Cary, North Carolina.

Driver Faces Multiple Felony Charges

Morris-Jones was arrested and faces a series of charges connected to the 𝔠r𝘢sh.

According to authorities, the charges include felony dєatᩚh by vehicle, seven counts of felony serious injury by vehicle, eight counts of felony hit-and-run, driving while impaired, reckless driving and driving left of center.

He is being held at the Wake County Detention Center under a $1 million secured bond.

The Highway Patrol has said impairment is suspected to have been a factor. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not yet been established in court.

Cycling Community Left Reeling

The tᩚraɢedy has shaken the local cycling community.

The Capital Cycling Club is a group whose members regularly ride together in the region. The 𝔠r𝘢sh has prompted renewed concern about the dangers cyclists face when sharing public roads with motor vehicles.

Shaun King, board chair of Bike Durham, said the incident had left cyclists across the region feeling vulnerable. He also called for greater awareness and improved road safety measures, including clearer signs warning motorists to share the road and pass cyclists safely.

Holly Springs Fire Department Chief LeRoy Smith urged drivers to remain alert around people riding bicycles, emphasizing that cyclists have the right to use public roads.

For Turner’s loved ones and the injured riders, what began as a routine Saturday morning outing has ended in tᩚraɢedy. As investigators work to establish exactly what happened, the wider cycling community is mourning a fellow rider and hoping those injured can recover.
