Six People Killed in Brooklyn Inferno as Neighbors Reveal Heartbreaking Details About Victims

A devastating overnight fire tore through a residential building in Brooklyn, š˜¬iᩚlling six people and leaving nine others injured. As investigators search for answers, neighbors are beginning to reveal heartbreaking details about the victims, who were reportedly older members of the local Chinese immigrant community.

The three-alarm blaze erupted shortly before 1:40 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, at a two-story residential building at 653 58th Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood of New York City.

When firefighters arrived, they encountered an intense fire engulfing the basement and both floors of the wooden row house. Flames were pouring from the windows, making the rescue operation extremely dangerous.

FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods described the terrifying scene.

ā€œUpon arrival, we had fire on every floor,ā€ he said, explaining that flames were coming out of every window and reaching the front entrance.

More than 230 firefighters and emergency medical personnel, supported by 74 units, rushed to battle the inferno.

Despite the enormous response, the fire claimed six lives. Four people were pronounced dead inside the building, while two others died after being taken to hospitals in į‘•riᩚtiᩚcal condition.

All six victims were adults.

Nine other people were injured, including four civilians, three firefighters and two police officers. Authorities said the first responders suffered minor injuries.

Firefighters managed to rescue four people from the burning building. Two of them had become trapped behind window bars at the rear of the property and had to be reached through another entrance.

The fire also spread to an adjoining home, forcing nearby residents to leave. Eight people displaced by the disaster were provided with temporary hotel accommodation.

Neighbors share heartbreaking details about the victims

The identities of the six people killed have not yet been officially released. However, neighbors and community representatives told NY1 that the victims were older Chinese immigrants.

At least one was reportedly a man in his 50s, while the others were believed to be over 60. Community members also said no children were among those killed.

It remains unclear whether the victims belonged to one family or several households.

The tᩚraɢedy has deeply shaken Sunset Park, a neighborhood with a large Chinese immigrant population.

Local community advocates described the deaths as devastating and said residents were struggling to process the loss.

Community organizations have begun helping affected families and survivors with food, water and other essential support. The American Red Cross is also assisting displaced residents with temporary housing.

Investigators examine possible battery-related fire

As firefighters and investigators examined the charred building, a lithium-ion battery was discovered inside the property.

Such batteries are commonly used in electric bicycles and other electronic devices and have been associated with serious fires in New York City.

The discovery prompted hazardous-materials personnel to respond to the scene.

However, officials have not established whether the battery was involved in starting or spreading the blaze. The FDNY’s Bureau of Fire Investigation is still working to determine the origin and cause.

Previous complaints raise questions about the property

The tᩚraÉ¢edy has also drawn attention to the building’s history.

According to city records reported by the Associated Press, the Department of Buildings received complaints in 2025 alleging that the property had been converted into illegal apartments and that construction had taken place without the required permits.

Inspectors reportedly attempted to visit the property several times but were unable to gain access. The complaints were subsequently closed.

Authorities have not established that any alleged illegal conversions or building violations contributed to the fire.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the deaths as an unimaginable loss and praised firefighters for their rapid response.

The blaze was brought under control at approximately 4:28 a.m., nearly three hours after the initial emergency call.

For the Sunset Park community, the devastation extends far beyond the burned building. Six neighbors are gone, families have lost loved ones, and survivors are facing the difficult task of rebuilding their lives.

Investigators are continuing their work, but for now, one of the most important questions remains unanswered: What caused the fire to spread so quickly through the residential building?
