Six People Killed as Massive Fire Tears Through Brooklyn Home, Trapping Residents Inside During Terrifying Overnight Blaze

A devastating overnight fire ripped through a residential building in Brooklyn, 𝘬iᩚlling six people and leaving several others injured as more than 200 firefighters and emergency responders rushed to battle the flames.
The diᩚadℓy blaze broke out shortly before 1:40 a.m. on Thursday, November 5, at a two-story wooden row house on 58th Street in the Sunset Park neighborhood of New York City.
When firefighters arrived, they were confronted with an intense inferno spreading throughout the building.
“Upon arrival, we had fire on every floor,” FDNY Chief of Fire Operations Kevin Woods said. “Fire blowing out every window, meeting us at the front door.”
The fire quickly escalated into a three-alarm emergency, prompting a massive response involving more than 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
Inside the burning home, residents were trapped as flames and thick smoke spread through the structure. Firefighters managed to rescue four people, including two who were trapped behind window bars and had to be reached through a rear entrance.
The rescue operation was especially dangerous as parts of the building began to collapse. The staircase and sections of the second floor gave way while crews worked to reach people inside.
Despite their efforts, the tᩚraɢedy claimed six lives.
Four victims were found dead at the scene. Two others were rushed to hospital in ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal condition but later died from their injuries.
Several additional people were hurt, including civilians, three firefighters and two police officers. The number of injured was initially reported as seven, but later reporting put the total at nine.
The blaze also spread to a neighboring home, forcing nearby residents to leave their properties. Eight displaced residents were taken to hotels with assistance from the city.
Investigators examine possible lithium-ion battery connection
As investigators began examining the charred remains of the building, a lithium-ion battery was discovered at the scene.
These batteries are commonly used in electric bicycles and other electronic devices, and have been linked to a growing number of dangerous fires in New York City.
However, officials have stressed that finding a battery at the property does not establish that it caused the blaze.
Fire marshals are continuing to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. No official determination has been announced.
The tᩚraɢedy comes amid growing concern over battery-related fires across the city. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has previously highlighted the number of fires involving lithium-ion batteries and the importance of improving safety measures.
Questions about the building
The fire has also drawn attention to the condition and history of the residential property.
City records reportedly showed complaints in 2025 alleging illegal apartment conversions and construction without the required permits. Inspectors had attempted to visit the building but were unable to gain access, and the complaints were subsequently closed.
Authorities have not established that those complaints or any alleged building violations contributed to the diᩚadℓy fire.
The investigation will need to determine how the blaze began, why it spread so rapidly and whether any safety issues played a role.
A neighborhood left mourning
The severely burned building has become the scene of a heartbreaking loss for the Sunset Park community.
Mayor Mamdani described the incident as devastating, saying the neighborhood would need time to mourn the people who died and recover from the tᩚraɢedy.
For the families of the six victims, the investigation offers little immediate comfort. Their loved ones were inside their home when a sudden fire turned an ordinary night into a disaster.

As investigators continue searching through the wreckage, the cause of the fire remains unknown.
