The DNA Left on JonBenét’s Body for 30 Years Still Has No Name — And Police Are About to Risk the Last Sample

Nearly thirty years after six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ in the basement of her Boulder home on December 26, 1996, one laboratory designation continues to dominate the unsolved case: Unknown Male 1. This unidentified male DNA profile, recovered from the child’s clothing, has never matched any member of the Ramsey family and has never produced a hit in the FBI’s CODIS database. In 2008, touch-DNA testing detected the same profile on the outside of her pajama bottoms that had earlier been found inside her underwear, confirming the presence of an unknown male at the scene. District Attorney Mary Lacy used those results to state that John, Patsy, and Burke Ramsey were no longer under suspicion. The ABC special that aired on November 6, 2026, returns to that same profile with heightened urgency, examining whether modern forensic genetic genealogy can finally convert the label into an actual name.

The remaining samples are extremely small, and that limitation now drives every decision. Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn, speaking on camera for the first time about the investigation, told Diane Sawyer that his department is actively discussing single-nucleotide-polymorphism testing combined with genetic genealogy with specialized laboratories. These methods have solved other cold cases by matching crime-scene DNA to distant relatives in consumer databases rather than requiring the perpetrator himself to appear in a criminal database. Redfearn was explicit about the risk: the material may contain DNA from more than one person, and the testing process can consume the entire remaining sample, leaving no second chance. The department is waiting for confidence that the technology is sufficiently advanced before risking what may be the last usable material.

Burke Ramsey, now 39, broke a long public silence in the days surrounding the broadcast and pointed directly at the same evidence. He stated that the DNA found on his sister’s underwear and beneath her fingernails never matched anyone in the family, and he described it as the best remaining chance to identify the person responsible. He urged investigators to send the material to laboratories capable of the newest methods and to continue testing until a match appears. The 20/20 investigation, built around nineteen exclusive interviews including Burke and half-brother John Andrew Ramsey, places that demand against the current forensic reality. The program does not announce a breakthrough; it examines why the profile has remained unidentified for so long and what would be required to change that status.

The case remains an open homicide investigation. No one has ever been charged or convicted. Patsy Ramsey died in 2006 without being charged. Investigators continue to receive tips, conduct new and re-interviews, and review the vast collection of evidence that includes tens of thousands of items and reports. The November 6 special, which streams on Disney+ and Hulu, centers the conversation on whether the DNA left behind in 1996 can still produce a name before the samples are exhausted or further degraded. The question the investigation leaves open is whether Unknown Male 1 is finally reachable with the tools available in 2026, or whether the label will remain a mystery while the last physical evidence disappears inside a laboratory.
