“Her Arm Is Gone”: Terrifying 911 Calls Reveal Moments After Florida Mother Was Mauled by Alligator

Horrifying emergency calls have captured the panic and desperation of bystanders moments after a 58-year-old mother was savagely attacked by an alligator during a family outing on a Florida river.
Dina Rae Spann was swimming in the Silver River in Marion County on August 8 when the enormous reptile suddenly lunged at her. The attack left her with catastrophic injuries to her right arm and left hand, as horrified relatives and nearby boaters scrambled to pull her to safety.
In one of the newly released 911 recordings, a female caller can be heard desperately describing the woman’s injuries to an emergency dispatcher.
“Somebody got bit by an alligator. I think her arm got bit. It’s dangling off,” the caller said.
When the dispatcher asked for clarification, the woman explained that Spann had lost a substantial portion of her arm.
“She lost half an arm. We need help,” she pleaded.
A second emergency call captured another chilling moment. As a woman cried and screamed in the background, a male caller told the dispatcher where they were.
“Her arm is gone,” he said.
The recordings reveal the frantic aftermath of an attack that could easily have ended in tᩚraɢedy.
Spann’s son, Zach Guerrina, previously described how his mother fought desperately to survive. According to him, she tried to hold the alligator’s mouth shut while struggling to reach the surface for air and prevent it from biting her legs.
“She wasn’t just letting it happen,” he said.
The alligator eventually released her, leaving Spann clinging to a paddleboard in the water. Nearby boater John Gamache heard the commotion and rushed toward the group with his father.
Gamache recalled seeing the alligator charging toward the swimmers at full speed. When he reached them, he saw blood in the water and several people desperately trying to help.
He and his father pulled the victims aboard their boat and worked to get Spann to safety. Gamache used a rope to create a makeshift tourniquet around her severely injured arm to slow the bleeding before rushing the group to a nearby boat launch, where emergency responders were waiting.
“It was a terrible injury, bones poking out, blood everywhere,” Gamache recalled. “Obviously, the minutes mattered.”
Spann was taken to hospital, where doctors ultimately amputated her right arm below the elbow. She also lost part of the ring finger on her left hand.
The alligator, measuring 9 feet 8 inches, was captured and removed from the river the following day by a contracted trapper working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Despite the devastating injuries, Spann has shown remarkable determination throughout her recovery. In a video shared on Facebook in September, she revealed the extent of her amputations and delivered a defiant message.
“The gator got a piece of me. It didn’t get the best of me,” she wrote.

Her survival was made possible in part by the quick actions of strangers who heard the cries for help and rushed into the emergency.
The newly released recordings offer a disturbing glimpse into those desperate minutes, when a family outing on the water suddenly turned into a fight to save a woman’s life.
