A Scottish family has been left devastated after their 12-year-old daughter, Sophia Aitken, died after being struck by a bus during her school lunchbreak in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire.

The fatal collision happened at approximately 1:10 p.m. on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, on Lauchlan Way in the town where Sophia lived.

Emergency services rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a collision involving a female pedestrian and a bus. Despite their response, Sophia was pronounced dead at the scene. Police confirmed that no other injuries were reported.

Sophia was later formally named by Police Scotland, as her family shared an emotional tribute to the little girl whose life was taken far too soon.

“SHE WAS A RAY OF SUNSHINE”

In a statement released through Police Scotland, Sophia’s family expressed the depth of their heartbreak.

“We are devastated at the loss of our darling daughter Sophia. She was a ray of sunshine, and was loved by everyone who knew her. A light has gone out, and it will never return.”

They added: “We are comforted by the messages from the community. We would like to ask for privacy to grieve at this difficult time.”

STAGECOACH CONFIRMS ONE OF ITS BUSES WAS INVOLVED

The bus involved in the collision was confirmed to be operated by Stagecoach.

Fiona Doherty, regional director for Stagecoach Scotland, expressed the company’s condolences following the tᩚraɢedy.

“Our immediate thoughts are with the family of the girl who lost her life and all those affected by yesterday’s tragic accident in Kilwinning.”

She also confirmed that the company was supporting colleagues directly involved in the incident and would continue providing assistance to Police Scotland as officers carried out their investigation.

Police closed Lauchlan Way while investigations were conducted at the scene. The road was later reopened, with Police Scotland reporting that it had reopened at approximately 7:30 p.m.

There were no reports of any other injuries in the collision.

POLICE APPEAL FOR WITNESSES AND DASHCAM FOOTAGE

Sergeant Stewart Taylor said officers were thinking first and foremost of Sophia’s family and friends, as well as everyone affected by the collision.
