Meghan Markle’s Father Arrested by FBI Over Alleged Child 𝘢bu𝘴e Images as Court Orders Electronic Monitoring

Thomas Markle Sr., the estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has been arrested by FBI agents in Florida and charged with possessing child 𝘴єxual 𝘢bu𝘴e material. The 82-year-old appeared in federal court following his arrest, where a judge ordered him released under strict monitoring conditions while the criminal case proceeds.
Markle was arrested on November 6, 2026, at his assisted-living facility in Lakeland, Florida. Federal prosecutors allege that he kept sexually explicit images involving underage girls in two storage units in the Los Angeles area that he had rented for nearly two decades.
According to the US Department of Justice, FBI agents searched both storage units under court-authorized warrants and seized approximately 78 items, including photographs, slides, film negatives and books containing suspected child 𝘴єxual 𝘢bu𝘴e material.
The federal complaint describes several images investigators allegedly discovered. Two reportedly showed an adult man, identified by a witness as Markle, with a nude prepubescent girl. Another allegedly depicted a young girl in a room believed to be part of a hotel chain in the Philippines.
Prosecutors say additional photographs appeared to show Markle with children in various stages of undress. The FBI investigation is continuing.
First Assistant US Attorney Bill Essayli said the allegations were extremely serious and that prosecutors intended to pursue the case under federal law.
Markle appeared before a federal magistrate judge in Tampa on Friday. During the brief hearing, the charges were read to him and he indicated that he understood them. He did not enter a plea.
The judge subsequently allowed him to leave custody under home detention and electronic monitoring. He is also subject to restrictions on his travel while awaiting further proceedings. His formal arraignment in California has not yet been scheduled.
If convicted, Markle faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison.
The investigation reportedly began after authorities received information in October about suspected illegal material among Markle’s belongings in the Philippines. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., had previously claimed that he discovered a large collection of disturbing images at his father’s former home and reported the matter to authorities.
Investigators subsequently traced information to the two storage units in California, which Markle had reportedly rented since 2008.
The allegations have also attracted international attention because of Markle’s relationship with his famous daughter. Meghan has been estranged from her father since her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
Before his arrest, Markle strongly denied the accusations in an interview with the Daily Mail, describing them as “sick lies” and saying he was shocked and hurt by the allegations.
Meghan previously issued a statement saying she was deeply distressed by the reports and that her thoughts were with any children who may have been harmed. She also explained that her decision to keep her father away from her own children was intended to protect them.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex declined to comment on the arrest.

The case could now move forward in California, where federal prosecutors will have to prove the allegations against Markle. For the moment, he remains presumed innocent unless convicted in court.
