BREAKING: Bryan Kohberger’s Idaho Mu-rder Case Takes Another Dramatic Turn as He Seeks to Withdraw His Guilty Plea!hl

Bryan Kohberger’s Idaho murder case has entered a new legal phase after he asked a judge to withdraw the guilty plea that resulted in four consecutive life sentences for the 2022 killings of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin.

Kohberger pleaded guilty in July 2025 as part of an agreement that removed the possibility of the dєatᩚh penalty. He was subsequently sentenced to four consecutive terms of life without parole, plus a 10-year sentence for burglary. His plea agreement also waived his right to a direct appeal.

Now, Kohberger claims his plea was not knowingly and voluntarily entered. In a handwritten peтιтion filed from prison, he alleges that his former defense attorneys pressured him into accepting the deal, made promises about prison conditions and misrepresented what life on dєatᩚh row would be like. He also alleges that potentially useful evidence was not adequately reviewed or disclosed during the plea process.

Those claims directly conflict with what Kohberger told the court when he entered his plea. In July 2025, he affirmed that he was pleading guilty because he was guilty and that no other promises had influenced his decision.

The legal hurdle is significant. Because Kohberger has already been sentenced, Idaho law requires him to establish “manifest injustice” to withdraw the plea—such as demonstrating that it was involuntary or that serious consтιтutional violations occurred.

The case is nevertheless moving forward. Judge Steven Hippler has scheduled a status conference for June 3, 2027, with a potential evidentiary hearing set for June 17, 2027. Prosecutors have asked the court to dismiss Kohberger’s peтιтion without an evidentiary hearing.

Kohberger has also sought to have Judge Hippler removed from the post-conviction proceedings, while his newer legal team is pursuing additional procedural challenges.

For now, the crucial point is that Kohberger has not been granted a new trial and his guilty plea has not been withdrawn. The court still has to determine whether his allegations meet the legal standard required to reopen the case.

The next major chapter is therefore not a new trial—but a legal battle over whether the plea that ended the prosecution can itself be undone.
