JUST HOURS AFTER PLAYING THE GAME HE LOVED, 16-YEAR-OLD FOOTBALL STAR DEEJAY TUIASOSOPO WAS KILLED IN A TRAGIC š rš¢sh
A promising young athlete with dreams of winning a state championship has died after being struck by a vehicle in Washington state. His family, teammates and community are now struggling to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
A Friday night that began with football ended in heartbreak for 16-year-old Deejay Tuiasosopo, a student at Federal Way High School in Washington.
Deejay was in his first season with the schoolās football team and had dreams of becoming a state champion. The running back and linebacker wore jersey No. 56 and was expected to graduate in 2028.
But just hours after playing in a game, the teenager lost his life in a devastating collision near the same area where he had spent the evening doing what he loved.
A TRAGIC š rš¢sh AFTER THE GAME
According to reports, Deejay was standing on a sidewalk near the intersection of Pacific Highway South and South 304th Street late Friday night when a vehicle collided with another car and struck him.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Deejay was pronounced dead.
Authorities arrested a 29-year-old man on suspicion of vehicular homicide, alleging that he was impaired at the time of the š rš¢sh. The investigation remains a matter for law enforcement, and the allegations have not been established as a conviction.
The sudden loss has left a family grieving a son whose life was only beginning and a school community mourning a teammate who had so much potential.
A DREAM THAT WILL NEVER BE FULFILLED
For Deejay, football was more than a game. It was an opportunity to work toward a goal, build friendships and represent his school.
He had joined the Federal Way High School team for his first season, carrying the ambition of one day becoming a state champion.
His teammate David Rodriguez spoke about the dreams Deejay had been working toward and the pain of knowing he would never get the chance to achieve them.
āThe fact he canāt do that, thatās just, it just feels sad,ā Rodriguez said.
Those words capture the heartbreak felt by young teammates who must now face the loss of someone who should have had many more games, seasons and milestones ahead of him.
A FAMILY WITH DEEP ROOTS IN SPORTS
Deejay came from a family with an extraordinary history in American sports, including connections to the NFL, college football, volleyball and Major League Baseball.
His great-uncle, Manu Tuiasosopo, was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft. He later played for the San Francisco 49ers and was part of the team that won Super Bowl XIX in January 1985.
Manuās son, Marques Tuiasosopo, became a standout quarterback at the University of Washington and was named Most Valuable Player of the 2001 Rose Bowl after leading the Huskies to victory. He later played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets.
Other relatives also built careers in sports. Zach Tuiasosopo spent time on NFL practice squads, Leslie Tuiasosopo became head coach of the University of Washington womenās volleyball team, and Matt Tuiasosopo played professional baseball in Major League Baseball.
Yet amid this remarkable sporting legacy, Deejay was a teenager forging his own path ā a young player with his own ambitions, teammates and dreams.
His life cannot be measured by his familyās achievements or the future he might have had. He was a son, a relative, a friend and a young man whose presence mattered to the people around him.
A COMMUNITY GATHERS TO REMEMBER HIM
On Saturday, friends, relatives and members of the community gathered near the intersection where Deejay died to pay tribute to him.
Flowers and balloons were left at the scene, while some tributes featured the numbers five and six in honour of his football jersey, No. 56.
Two of Deejayās uncles told KOMO that they were left feeling numb by the tį©raÉ¢edy.
The gathering became a place for loved ones to grieve, remember the teenager and show support for a family facing a loss that words cannot fully describe.
For his teammates, the football field will now carry a painful reminder of someone who shared their hopes and worked toward the same goals.
GONE TOO SOON
At just 16, Deejay had so much of life ahead of him. He should have had more opportunities to play, grow, graduate and discover what his future might hold.
Instead, his family and friends are left with memories of a young athlete whose dreams were cut short in a matter of moments.
His jersey number has become a symbol of remembrance ā a tribute to the player he was and the future he hoped to build.
Rest in peace, Deejay Tuiasosopo. May your family find strength in the love surrounding them, and may your teammates continue to carry your memory with them every time they step onto the field.
