KARMELO ANTHONY’S FAMILY IS RAISING $250,000 FOR THE NEXT FIGHT — WHILE NEW EVIDENCE REIGNITES THE CASE

The Karmelo Anthony case is entering a new phase, and this time the battle is not taking place inside a Collin County courtroom. Anthony’s family and attorneys are preparing for an extended appellate fight after a judge rejected his request for a new trial, while supporters are being asked to contribute toward a new $250,000 legal fund. At almost the same moment, newly released documents have brought previously unseen material from Anthony’s past into the public spotlight, ensuring that the case remains one of the most intensely debated criminal stories in Texas.

Anthony was convicted in June of murdering 17-year-old Austin Metcalf, who was fatally stabbed during a confrontation at a high school track meet in Frisco in April 2025. The jury ultimately rejected Anthony’s self-defense position and convicted him of murder. He was sentenced to 35 years in prison, but his new legal team quickly began examining the trial for possible grounds for appeal.

The first major appellate setback came in August. Judge Michael Chitty denied Anthony’s motion for a new trial after an extensive hearing that examined how the original case had been handled. Anthony’s lawyers argued that unusual procedures, restricted courtroom access, private conferences and an agreement concerning background evidence had compromised the fairness of the proceedings. Prosecutors rejected those arguments and said the trial had been conducted appropriately under extraordinary circumstances.

The denial, however, was not the end. Anthony’s attorneys immediately said they would continue pursuing every lawful avenue available. Local reporting indicates that the case is moving toward the Fifth Court of Appeals in Dallas, with a formal record expected to be filed in October and substantive appellate proceedings potentially extending into 2027.

Now money has become a major part of the story. Anthony’s family announced a new fundraising campaign with a $250,000 target to help finance the appeal. NBC 5 reported that Anthony’s parents, attorneys and supporters gathered in Dallas to discuss the legal strategy and emphasize that the denial of a new trial should not be interpreted as the end of the case. Earlier reporting indicated that the new campaign had already attracted donations from supporters who continue to believe Anthony’s account of the confrontation and want his conviction challenged.

The financial campaign comes as the evidentiary controversy surrounding the case becomes more intense. Newly released documents reportedly include pH๏τographs of Anthony holding firearms, videos and messages that prosecutors characterize as evidence of violent or threatening behavior before Austin’s dєatᩚh. The material was not shown to jurors because prosecutors and defense attorneys had reached an agreement designed to keep the personal histories of both teenagers outside the trial.

That agreement remains central to the appeal. Anthony’s attorneys argue that the restrictions were so significant that they affected his ability to mount a full defense. Prosecutors maintain that the agreement was necessary because introducing the background of either teenager could have created prejudice and distracted jurors from the specific events that led to Austin’s dєatᩚh. The courts will ultimately have to decide whether the procedures used at trial were legally acceptable.

Meanwhile, Austin Metcalf’s father has offered a perspective that is difficult to separate from the legal debate. Jeff Metcalf has said that he does not believe any prison sentence can provide his family with genuine justice because the sentence cannot return Austin to them. He has also said he forgave Anthony, explaining that forgiveness was necessary for his own emotional and spiritual wellbeing. His comments underscore the profound difference between the legal consequences of a conviction and the permanent personal consequences of losing a child.
