Mother’s Argument With Son Over Rescue Cats Ended in tᩚraɢedy, Prosecutors Allege

A Massachusetts mother devoted to rescuing abandoned cats was found shot dead inside her family home hours after reportedly arguing with her eldest son about the number of animals she was caring for. Her son, 22-year-old Ryan Hanafin, has been charged with her murder.

Andria Hanafin, 49, was discovered by her husband, Matthew, shortly after he returned from work around midnight on October 8 at their home in Reading, Massachusetts. Prosecutors allege that Ryan shot his mother following tensions over the cats she fostered and her request that he move out.

According to court documents cited by local media, Andria had called her husband the previous evening to discuss another argument with Ryan. She reportedly told him she wanted their son to leave the family home. Investigators also spoke with a neighbor who reported hearing a popping sound that night.

Prosecutors have cited messages Ryan allegedly sent through Snapchat in the hours surrounding the 𝘬iᩚlling. In one message, he reportedly told a friend that he had told a cousin he had “blew madre to pieces,” using the Spanish word for mother. The messages form part of the allegations presented in court.

Ryan was arrested in Vermont on October 8 after leaving Massachusetts. He was later returned to the state and arraigned in Woburn District Court, where he pleaded not guilty. He faces a first-degree murder charge and several firearm-related charges, and a judge ordered him held without bail. His next court date was scheduled for November 10.

Investigators also reported finding 19 firearms in his bedroom. Prosecutors said some of the weapons were improperly stored, leading to additional charges.

Beyond the criminal case, Andria’s dєatᩚh has deeply affected the local animal-rescue community. She worked as a veterinary technician and was known for taking in abandoned cats, including animals with serious medical needs or difficult temperaments. Friends described her as someone who readily helped both people and animals.

After her dєatᩚh, animal welfare officials removed 84 cats from the family home. The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the cats were being cared for at its shelters, with some requiring additional medical attention before they could be placed in new homes.

The case has left relatives, friends and fellow rescuers grieving a woman remembered for her compassion. The criminal allegations against Ryan remain before the court, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
