A NIGHT THAT ENDED IN tᩚraɢedy
According to the Federal Way Police Department, officers responded at approximately 10:48 p.m. Friday following reports of a fatal collision involving a pedestrian.
The preliminary investigation found that two vehicles collided at the intersection. One vehicle then left the roadway and struck Deejay, who was standing on a nearby sidewalk.

Authorities arrested a 29-year-old driver on suspicion of vehicular homicide. Police suspect impairment played a role in the 𝔠r𝘢sh, although the investigation was still underway as of the latest reports.
The other driver’s condition was not detailed in the initial reports.
What should have been an ordinary Friday night following a football game instead became a devastating loss for a family and school community.
A YOUNG ATHLETE WITH BIG DREAMS
Deejay was in his first season with the Federal Way High School Eagles after transferring to the school. He played running back and linebacker, wearing jersey No. 56.
His team had just secured a 28–27 victory over White River on senior night.
Teammates described Deejay as a positive presence who brought energy and laughter to practices and games. Beyond his athletic ability, friends remembered him for his personality and the way he connected with others.
His teammate David Rodriguez spoke about the dreams Deejay had been working toward and the pain of knowing he would not get the chance to pursue them.
“The fact he can’t do that, that’s just, it just feels sad,” Rodriguez said.
Other classmates and teammates also struggled to accept that someone so young, with so much ahead of him, was suddenly gone.
Deejay was not only a football player. He was also involved in wrestling, and friends had high hopes for his future in the sport.
Now, his teammates say they want to carry his memory with them throughout the season.
A FAMILY WITH A LEGACY IN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS
Deejay belonged to the Tuiasosopo family, whose members have made their mark in professional football, college athletics and Major League Baseball.
His great-uncle, Manu Tuiasosopo, was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the first round of the 1979 NFL Draft. Manu later played for the San Francisco 49ers and was part of the team that won Super Bowl XIX in January 1985.
Another prominent relative, Marques Tuiasosopo, played quarterback at the University of Washington and was named Most Valuable Player of the 2001 Rose Bowl after leading the Huskies to victory. He later played in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets.
Other relatives have also pursued careers in sports, including former professional baseball player Matt Tuiasosopo and university volleyball coach Leslie Gabriel.
Although Deejay came from a family with an established sporting history, those who knew him said he was working toward his own goals and creating his own identity.
His dєatᩚh has left relatives mourning not only a young family member, but a teenager whose ambitions and potential were still unfolding.
FAMILY AND FRIENDS GATHER AT MEMORIAL
On Saturday, friends, relatives, teammates and community members gathered near the intersection where Deejay lost his life.
Flowers, candles, balloons and handwritten tributes were placed at the scene, transforming the sidewalk into a memorial for the teenager.
Some tributes featured the numbers five and six, honoring the No. 56 jersey he wore on the football field.
The gathering reflected the impact Deejay had on those around him and the grief felt by a community struggling to understand how a young athlete’s life could end so suddenly.
Two of his uncles told KOMO News they were left numb by the tᩚraɢedy.
In a family statement reported by local media, relatives also expressed gratitude for the support they had received, saying Deejay’s energy and presence had reached more people than they had fully realized.
TEAMMATES VOW TO HONOR HIS MEMORY
As students and athletes continue to mourn, Deejay’s teammates have begun talking about how they will remember him throughout the rest of the season.
For them, the loss is deeply personal. They shared practices, games and everyday moments with a friend who had become part of their team.
Some have said they hope to reach the state championships in his honor, carrying his memory onto the field.
Their tributes have focused not only on his potential as an athlete, but also on his smile, kindness and the friendships he built.
INVESTIGATION INTO THE FATAL 𝔠r𝘢sh CONTINUES
Federal Way police and the Major Accident Investigation Team are continuing to investigate the collision.
A 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, and prosecutors were expected to consider formal charges. An arrest is not a conviction, and the allegations must be resolved through the legal process.
Investigators are working to establish the circumstances of the 𝔠r𝘢sh, including the events that led to the two vehicles colliding and one entering the sidewalk.
For Deejay’s loved ones, however, the immediate reality is the loss of a teenager who had played football only hours before his dєatᩚh.
At 16, he had years of school, sport and life ahead of him. His dreams of competing for a state championship may never be fulfilled, but his family, friends and teammates are determined that his memory will remain part of their community.
As flowers and balloons continue to mark the place where he died, Deejay Tuiasosopo is being remembered as a young athlete, a beloved friend and a teenager whose life touched far more people than he may ever have known.
