Grieving Godmother Blames Police Pursuit After Goddaughter Is Killed in š” rš˜¢sh

A grieving Tennessee godmother is demanding answers after her 31-year-old goddaughter was killed when a car she was riding in crashed during a police pursuit in Memphis.

Renisha Thompson, a cosmetologist, was a passenger in a Cadillac driven by 32-year-old Justin Thomas when the vehicle became involved in a pursuit involving law enforcement officers. Thompson was reportedly on her way to buy groceries when the incident unfolded.

According to local reports, officers had been monitoring Thomas after previous alleged attempts to flee law enforcement. The situation escalated when he allegedly failed to stop for a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper, triggering a chase that ended in a multi-vehicle š” rš˜¢sh near South Third Street and Red Leaf Lane in South Memphis.

Thompson was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. Thomas was injured and taken to hospital. Several other vehicles were reportedly damaged in the collision.

Thompson’s godmother, Shawn Crawford, has sharply criticized the decision to pursue the vehicle, arguing that authorities had opportunities to apprehend Thomas before Thompson became involved.

Crawford said her goddaughter had no idea what was happening and should never have been placed in such a dangerous situation. She has called for police to reconsider high-speed pursuit practices, particularly when officers may have other opportunities to arrest a suspect.

Her comments reflect the family’s anguish over a dєatᩚh they believe could have been prevented. However, the circumstances surrounding the pursuit and the š” rš˜¢sh remain subject to investigation, and the family’s criticism does not itself establish whether officers acted improperly.

Thomas faces charges that reportedly include vehicular manslaughter, fleeing law enforcement, speeding and drug-related offenses. The allegations have not been resolved in court.

At a vigil following Thompson’s dєatᩚh, loved ones remembered her as a caring, hardworking woman who played an important role in the lives of her family and friends. Crawford described the loss as devastating, saying Thompson had been a central part of their lives.

The family is now left mourning a woman who, according to her godmother, was simply going about her day when she became caught up in a police pursuit.
