💔⚾️ 11-YEAR-OLD ARIZONA BASEBALL PLAYER FACES EXTREMELY RARE DISEASE AFTER SUDDENLY BECOMING ILL

Just weeks ago, Giovanni “Gio” Cruz was doing what many 11-year-olds love to do—dancing, smiling, playing baseball and getting ready for a new school year.

Today, the Tucson, Arizona, boy is in the hospital facing an extremely rare medical condition that has dramatically changed his life.

Gio’s frightening journey began in June when he suddenly developed severe chest and back pain.

His mother, Patricia, said she was picking him up from his sister’s home when he began complaining that his chest hurt. His condition quickly became more concerning as he experienced intense pain and sweating.

Patricia rushed him to Tucson Medical Center.

Gio spent approximately a week undergoing tests before being discharged without a clear diagnosis. But once he returned home, his mother knew something was still wrong.

He became extremely tired and wanted to sleep much of the time. Soon afterward, he began vomiting heavily and experiencing episodes in which his cheeks became intensely red.

His family returned to the hospital, and Gio was eventually transferred to Banner Diamond Children’s Medical Center, where specialists continued searching for answers.

They eventually identified the condition: idiopathic multicentric Castleman disease, or iMCD.

The disorder is extremely rare and can cause abnormal enlargement of lymph nodes throughout multiple areas of the body. It can also cause the immune system to become excessively activated, resulting in widespread inflammation that may affect organs such as the kidneys, liver and bone marrow.

Gio’s condition is multicentric, meaning multiple lymph-node regions throughout his body are involved.

His family says he has already endured an extensive series of medical procedures and tests, including three biopsies, the removal of three lymph nodes, MRIs, CT scans, echocardiograms, ultrasounds, X-rays and numerous blood tests.

The illness has also caused fluid to build up around his abdomen, lungs and heart, making breathing difficult and requiring supplemental oxygen.

Gio has experienced persistent fevers and kidney complications and is currently receiving IL-6-directed therapy, high-dose intravenous steroids and dialysis.

Doctors reportedly anticipate approximately six to eight weeks of treatment and close monitoring. If Gio’s body does not respond sufficiently to the current treatment, additional therapies may be considered.

For his family, the sudden illness has been especially difficult because iMCD has no known cause.

Only weeks before his symptoms began, Gio had been looking forward to sixth grade and starting middle school in Sahuarita.

He was also looking forward to baseball.

Gio is an avid player who takes the field at first base and third base and also pitches. Baseball has been an important part of his young life, making his current circumstances particularly difficult.

Instead of preparing for school and spending his summer on the baseball field, he is now spending his days surrounded by doctors, nurses, tests and intensive treatment.

Yet his family remains by his side.

A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help support the family while they spend as much time as possible with Gio during his hospitalization.

For now, the goal is simple: give his treatment time to work and help his body recover.

Gio still has a long road ahead.

But behind the medical terminology and frightening diagnosis is an 11-year-old boy who loves baseball, enjoys being active and should be thinking about school, teammates and the next game.

His family is asking for support and prayers as he continues treatment.

Just weeks ago, Gio was preparing for a new school year. Today, he is fighting for his health. His family is hoping that the next chapter will be one of healing, recovery and, eventually, a return to the baseball field. 💙⚾️🙏
