STORM BOELO tᩚraɢedy: FAMILIES PAY HEARTBREAKING TRIBUTES TO VICTIMS KILLED AS POWERFUL WINDS BATTER BRITAIN

A loving father, a respected botanical garden curator and a young man remembered as exceptionally talented are among those mourned after Storm Boelo brought dangerous winds, falling trees and widespread disruption across Britain.

Families and friends are paying emotional tributes to people who lost their lives as Storm Boelo swept across Britain, bringing powerful winds, heavy rain and hazardous conditions.

Among the victims were James Abiwon, 29, who died after a tree fell onto his car in north London, and Richard Baines, 60, a respected horticulturist who was struck by a falling tree near Castle Douglas in Scotland.

The storm also coincided with a fatal road collision in Bathgate, West Lothian, where 20-year-old Arran Callander and an 84-year-old man died in a three-vehicle 𝔠r𝘢sh.

Abiwon died on Sunday, October 25, after a tree fell onto his car in Finchley, north London, during the storm.

His family and friends remembered him as a loving family man, a mentor and a man whose talents extended across business, technology, music and sport.

A graduate of the University of Essex, he worked as a technology sales executive and had recently received an award at work. He also played semi-professional football for Aldershot and built a YouTube audience of around 40,000 people.

Those who knew him described a young man with many interests and ambitions whose presence had made a lasting impression on the people around him.

In a particularly moving gesture, friends planned to go ahead with a padel tournament arranged for his upcoming 30th birthday, with proceeds intended to support his family.

The event is set to become a way for those who loved him to honour his memory while helping the people he leaves behind. <Cite refs={[“turn829394news4”]}/>

RESPECTED GARDEN CURATOR RICHARD BAINES, 60

In Scotland, Richard Baines died after being struck by a falling tree while walking near his home in Mid Kelton, close to Castle Douglas, in Dumfries and Galloway.

Baines was the curator of Logan Botanic Garden and had dedicated much of his professional life to plants, horticulture and botanical research.

David Knott, director of horticulture at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, paid tribute to Baines’ contributions, highlighting his role in developing the garden’s plant collection and leading important projects.

During his tenure, Logan Botanic Garden introduced an environmentally focused public conservatory and received recognition for its visitor experience and sustainability work.

Baines also participated in botanical fieldwork in China, the Canary Islands and Vietnam. Seven plant species connected with this research were being prepared for publication as new to science.

Colleagues remembered him for his passion, enthusiasm and lasting contribution to the garden and the wider botanical community.

ARRAN CALLANDER, 20, REMEMBERED AS ‘ONE OF A KIND’

Another family is grieving after Arran Callander died in a three-vehicle collision on the B708 Lower Bathville road in Bathgate, West Lothian, on Sunday.

The 20-year-old was driving a white BMW when it collided with a blue Citroën Saxo and a blue Peugeot 208 at around 12:15 p.m.

An 84-year-old man who was driving the Peugeot also died. A 19-year-old passenger in Callander’s car was taken to hospital, while two occupants of the Citroën were assessed by paramedics at the scene.

Callander’s sister, Angela, shared a heartfelt tribute, saying her brother would be deeply missed and that the loss still felt unreal.

Friends also remembered him for his humour, warmth and ability to make people laugh. One described him as a lifelong friend whose one-liners and shared memories would never be forgotten.

Police are continuing to investigate the collision and have appealed for witnesses and anyone with relevant dashcam footage to come forward.

A STORM THAT LEFT COMMUNITIES COUNTING THE COST

Storm Boelo brought damaging winds, heavy rain, flooding and widespread travel disruption across parts of Britain.

Wind gusts reached around 84 mph in some areas, while falling trees damaged vehicles and infrastructure. Power outages affected large numbers of households, and transport services were disrupted as emergency crews responded to incidents.

Authorities also warned that trees and buildings weakened by the storm could remain dangerous even after conditions began to ease.

For the families of those who died, however, the impact cannot be measured in cancelled journeys or damaged property.

James Abiwon’s loved ones are preparing to honour his memory through an event planned for his 30th birthday. Richard Baines’ colleagues are remembering a dedicated horticulturist whose work helped shape a much-loved garden. Arran Callander’s family and friends are trying to come to terms with losing a young man they described as one of a kind.

As communities begin recovering from the storm, those tributes offer a reminder that behind every headline is a person whose life mattered deeply to others.

Our thoughts are with the families, friends and communities grieving those lost during Storm Boelo.
