Charlize Theron Changed a Body, Sarah Paulson Plays a Character, and This Series Wants the Actual Face

The consent rule is the part the series wants counted as ethics rather than as a special effect. Dost laid out the roadmap to The Hollywood Reporter. Get written permission from the real people whose faces would be rebuilt, and from the actors playing them. Do not use the tool where permission cannot be got. Keep every reenacted line tied to transcripts, police records or interview memory. Say out loud that the technology is there. Rolling Stone reported that the production originally meant to run the process only on Wuornos, then decided the other characters were worth doing and went back for amended releases. Dost said they did not use it whenever there was a question mark.

The question marks have names. Tyria Moore, Wuornos’ former girlfriend, did not take part, so she is not worn as a digital double. Mike Joyner, an undercover investigator on the case, had been interviewed years earlier for another project and has since died. He could not sign a likeness release. The series uses an actor who resembles him and leaves the mask off. USA Today reported that the documentary prompts the viewer when generative visual effects were not used. The Hollywood Reporter listed the consented side as homicide investigators, a defense attorney, a private investigator and a friend, with USA Today naming Dawn Botkins, Steven Glazer, Brian Jarvis and David Taylor among the faces that were rebuilt. Wuornos herself, executed in 2002, could not consent. Producers treat her as a public figure whose archival image already existed, and they treat everyone else as a signature problem.

That split is the argument the series cannot settle by тιтle card. The absences are as loud as the faces they did rebuild, because the show is otherwise inviting the audience to look directly at people. Sarlanis told USA Today that viewers will notice uncanny moments, digitally masked characters meeting real actors, archived pH๏τographs that seem to wake up, smiling and laughing. He called the documentary handcrafted even though one of the tools is AI, and he said the hope, at minimum, is that it stirs a conversation. ID had already told this story without a mask. In 2019 the network released Aileen Wuornos: Mind of a Monster. The new series is the same 𝘬iᩚller and the same channel with a different rule: stop hiding the actor.

Sarlanis told The Hollywood Reporter that audiences now want realism and access, and that reenactments had become an obstacle. Dost told the same paper that anyone who says AI speeds this kind of work up is wrong, and that the ethical version slows everything down. The production took about three years. Counts of the crew differ by outlet: ᴅᴇᴀᴅline and ID materials have put it above a hundred, while Dost told Rolling Stone the team was seventy-plus, with writers and interviewers he described as traditional documentary labor under a visual-effects twist. The slowness is both the alibi and the accusation. A тιтle card admits the generative effects up front. The holes where Moore and Joyner should be are the other admission, and they are the easiest part of the ethics claim for a viewer to test.
