Georgia Family Finds Their Dog Alive Months After Paying for Her Euthanasia

A Georgia family says they were left devastated after allegedly discovering that their beloved pug was still alive months after they had paid an animal hospital to euthanize her.

The four-year-old dog, Cha Cha, was taken to Senoia Animal Hospital in Coweta County in March 2026 after becoming seriously ill. According to her owner, Rebecca Belote, veterinary staff said the pug was suffering from organ failure and diabetic ketoacidosis, a potentially life-threatening complication of diabetes, and recommended euthanasia.

The family agreed to the procedure and paid for the services, believing they had said goodbye to their pet. Cha Cha was especially close to Belote’s 17-year-old son, who often carried her and even wore matching outfits with her.

Months later, Belote said she was scrolling through Facebook when she came across a photograph of a dog she immediately recognized as Cha Cha. She alleged that a former hospital employee confirmed the pug had not been euthanized as the family had been led to believe, but had instead been taken home by a staff member.

Belote said the employee’s husband also confirmed that his wife had kept the dog and that Cha Cha appeared to be in good health.

The family alleges that the hospital eventually took Cha Cha back and euthanized her after questions were raised about what had happened. Belote believes the decision was made to conceal the earlier incident, although that allegation has not been independently established.

The animal hospital has denied the family’s account, according to reports, and has not publicly provided a full explanation of the allegations. The dispute has drawn renewed attention because another family previously reported a similar experience involving a cat at the same facility.

Police have reportedly declined to pursue criminal charges in the cases, citing questions about whether the conduct met the threshold for criminal prosecution. The matter has been referred to relevant authorities, and Belote said she filed a complaint with the Georgia State Board of Veterinary Medicine.

The case has raised serious questions for the family about what happened to Cha Cha after they believed they had lost her. The allegations remain disputed, and the regulatory review may help determine what occurred.
