An Hour of Failed Needle Sticks, Blown Veins, and Two Syringes of Pentobarbital Still Left Christa Pike Breathing and Snoring Inside the Chamber

The sequence that unfolded inside the exє𝔠uti☉n chamber on September 30 began after a day of legal activity in which a federal appeals court issued a temporary stay that was later vacated by the U.S. Supreme Court, allowing the state to proceed. According to statements from Pike’s attorneys and accounts from media witnesses, exє𝔠uti☉n personnel spent roughly an hour attempting to establish reliable intravenous access. Multiple needles were used. Her lawyers later reported that at least seven needles were inserted into her left arm alone and that veins were blown. One attorney described counting the punctures and stated that Pike complained of a burning sensation in her arm and that one needle was bent nearly ninety degrees when removed.

After the first dose of pentobarbital she reportedly remained conscious enough to indicate pain. A second dose was then administered. Media witnesses who had been allowed into the viewing area described hearing snoring-like sounds continuing after the second administration and noted that the blinds to the chamber were repeatedly closed. When the witnesses were eventually asked to leave, approximately fifty minutes after the process had begun in earnest, they stated that she could still be heard snoring. Her attorneys filed emergency motions in federal court that night ᴀsserting that she had not lost consciousness, still had a heartbeat, and was audibly snoring.

The Tennessee Department of Correction later issued a statement saying that it had followed every step of the established protocol and that the lєthaℓ inje𝔠ti☉n chemical had consistently been effective in prior uses, adding that the protocol did not authorize additional procedures beyond what had been carried out. Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility. Governor Bill Lee subsequently ordered a comprehensive third-party review of the events and suspended remaining executions scheduled for the rest of 2026. The head of the Tennessee Department of Correction, Frank Strada, resigned days later.

This was the second failed lєthaℓ-inje𝔠ti☉n attempt in the state within six months; in May the exє𝔠uti☉n of Tony Carruthers had been halted after personnel could not establish the required backup intravenous line. Attorneys for Pike have argued that the combination of prolonged vein-access difficulties, administration of the drug despite those difficulties, and the absence of immediate emergency medical capability inside the chamber amounted to unnecessary agony and violated consтιтutional protections against cruel and unusual punishment. A judge later ordered the state to preserve syringes, packaging, intravenous equipment, restraints, and related records from the chamber.
