MARTIN FRIZELL SHARES HEARTBREAKING UPDATE ON WIFE FIONA PHILLIPS’ ALZHEIMER’S BATTLE: “DAY BY DAY, WE CAN SEE IT SLIPPING AWAY”

The former GMTV presenter is living with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Her husband has spoken openly about the emotional toll of watching the progressive condition change the woman he has loved for nearly three decades.

For years, Fiona Phillips was one of the most familiar faces on British breakfast television. Now, away from the cameras, the former GMTV presenter is facing a very different chapter of her life as she continues to live with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Her husband, television producer Martin Frizell, has spoken candidly about the painful changes brought by the condition and the impact they have had on their family.

In February 2026, Frizell appeared on ITV’s Lorraine, where he shared an emotional update about his wife’s health.

He revealed that Fiona no longer remembered some significant occasions, including Valentine’s Day, Christmas and New Year.

Describing the experience of watching her condition progress, he said: “It’s wretched; not just for her but for the family as well.”

He added: “She’s still there, but day by day, we can see it slipping away.”

His words reflected the heartbreak of seeing someone he had known for so many years gradually experience changes in her memory and everyday life.

Fiona publicly revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

She was 61 when she shared the news, although she had received her diagnosis in early 2022.

Before discovering the cause, she had experienced symptoms including brain fog and anxiety, which she initially believed could be related to menopause.

The diagnosis was particularly difficult for Fiona because both of her parents had also lived with Alzheimer’s disease.

Her experience has since become an important part of her public work to raise awareness of dementia and the challenges faced by families affected by the condition.

With Martin’s support, she documented her experiences in her memoir, Remember When: My Life with Alzheimer’s.

During his television appearance, Martin also spoke about the emotional challenges of caring for his wife.

He admitted that the experience had affected his own mєntal health and that he sometimes had to guard against slipping into depression.

Returning to broadcasting and podcasting had provided him with some respite, but he also acknowledged feeling guilty when work meant spending time away from Fiona.

Despite the difficulties, Martin was keen to make one thing clear: Fiona was still very much present in their lives.

He described her as the world’s most stubborn woman, saying that familiar parts of her personality remained even as the illness affected her memory.

He did not want people to see his wife only through the lens of her diagnosis.

A HUSBAND’S COMMITMENT THROUGH THE DIFFICULT DAYS

Martin and Fiona married in 1997 and have two sons, Nathaniel and Mackenzie.

Martin stepped down from his role as editor of ITV’s This Morning in December 2024, explaining that he expected his family’s priorities to change.

Since then, he has continued speaking publicly about the realities of Alzheimer’s, including the challenges of caregiving and the need for greater investment in research.

He has also described the difficulty of knowing how to respond when Fiona becomes confused or does not recognise him as her husband.

In one particularly personal reflection, he explained that he understands such moments are caused by the illness, even though they remain painful for the family.

MORE THAN A HEADLINE: FIONA’S STORY CONTINUES

Fiona Phillips spent many years welcoming viewers into their homes as a presenter on GMTV. For audiences who remember her from television, hearing about her experience with Alzheimer’s has been deeply moving.

But Martin’s message is not simply about the progression of a disease. It is also about the emotional reality of loving someone through profound changes, adapting to uncertainty and finding meaningful moments together.

He has repeatedly called for more support for people living with dementia and their families, as well as greater funding for Alzheimer’s research.

There has been no reliable confirmation of a new medical emergency or the specific statement circulating online that Martin does not know how he will face life without Fiona.

What he has publicly shared is already deeply personal: his wife is living with a progressive illness, and the family is navigating its challenges one day at a time.

For Martin, Fiona remains the woman he married, the mother of their two sons and someone whose presence continues to mean everything to their family.
