Eddie Johnson called youth soccer a sport for the rich, then opened his Orlando academy to the three-year-old at the center of the Winter Park incident

Eddie Johnson spent parts of his professional career with clubs in Major League Soccer and with Fulham in the English Premier League, scored for the United States men’s national team, and later established EJE7 Soccer Academy in Orlando. When videos and body-camera footage from an October 24, 2026, i9 Sports game in Winter Park circulated, Johnson responded on social media with both criticism of the broader system and a concrete offer. He described youth soccer in the United States as a rich suburban sport controlled by privileged, enтιтled parents and said the episode involving three-year-old Nevada Pierre illustrated enтιтlement, jealousy, envy, nepotism, gatekeeping, and profiling, particularly against people of color.

Johnson wrote that Nevada deserves to be around someone who looks like him and can understand him, and that the academy was founded in part because there are not enough such environments. He added that the freedom and creativity visible in the child’s play is what the beautiful game is supposed to encourage and that a three-year-old with that ability should be praised rather than having it tarnished. The invitation is for training at EJE7 beginning in January. Coverage notes that the family had contacted the academy about a year earlier, when Nevada was two; Johnson had then said the child was too young and should first gain experience in local leagues. That experience ended with a police response, a refund, and the family being asked not to continue. Johnson’s decision to make an exception now places the preschooler inside a program run by a former national-team player minutes from the park where the incident occurred.

On the field that Saturday, Nevada had been playing against children as old as five. Parent-shared videos showed him dribbling and scoring; the league director told officers the boy was advanced yet had pushed other children and that the parents had become disruptive when subsтιтutions limited his time. The parents told officers the removal stemmed from their son being too good. Winter Park police treated the matter as civil, made no arrests, and confirmed the family left cooperatively. i9 Sports stated the call concerned adults and that the well-being of every child and family matters. Nevada’s mother has said the episode left him traumatized about returning to that specific environment while he still wants to play.

The GoFundMe she established has raised tens of thousands of dollars. Roc Nation Sports has publicly backed the child and, according to reporting by Loren LoRosa, is facilitating a December trip to Spain for developmental exposure that matches the family’s interest in European soccer environments. Johnson’s intervention is therefore one of two high-profile pathways that emerged within days. It also functions as a public statement about who controls access and opportunity in American youth soccer and about the scarcity of role models who share the background of many talented children who do not come from affluent suburban families. Whether the January start at EJE7 produces structured development, or whether the Spain trip and the financial support alter the family’s longer-term plans, remains to be seen. For the moment, the former USMNT striker has moved from diagnosing problems in the youth system to placing one of its most talked-about three-year-olds inside the academy he created to address some of those problems.
