The family of William Chapman is grieving the loss of a young man they describe as bright, warm and engaging, remembering him as someone who brought love and meaning into their lives.
William died on October 10, 2026, following an incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England. He was 23 or 24, according to differing reports.
His dєatᩚh has left his family and former friends deeply distressed. In a heartfelt statement, his loved ones described the devastating impact of their loss and asked the public to treat the situation with compassion.
“William was a bright, warm and engaging young man whom his family dearly loved – and William loved them back,” the family said.
They also expressed concern about distressing footage and online content being circulated following the incident, asking people to stop sharing material that was causing them further pain.
A YOUNG LIFE THAT INCLUDED A LOVE OF PERFORMING
Before his name appeared in national headlines, William had experienced life in front of the camera as a child performer.
He previously attended Jackie Palmer Stage School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, where he developed his interest in performing.
According to media reports, he appeared in the ITV comedy drama May Contain Nuts in 2009 and the BBC’s True Stories series in 2012.
The stage school later shared a tribute to its former student, expressing sadness at his passing and remembering the opportunity to watch him grow both as a person and as a performer.
The school said he would be remembered with great fondness and would always hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him.
WHAT HAPPENED AT YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK?
Emergency services were called shortly after 1:30 p.m. on October 10 after reports that a man had entered an animal enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
An inquest opening at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15 heard that William had climbed over two fences before entering the enclosure housing an Amur tiger named Altai.
According to evidence presented at the hearing, the tiger approached William and physical contact followed. An initial post-mortem examination found that he had sustained multiple traumatic injuries.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Park staff secured the animal, and emergency responders attended. Police had previously confirmed that William was visiting the park alone.
The incident prompted widespread public attention, but his family strongly objected to the circulation of footage and material showing the events surrounding his dєatᩚh.
FAMILY RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT HIS mєntal HEALTH CARE
In their statement, William’s family disclosed that he had experienced significant mєntal health difficulties over a number of years and had been prescribed strong medication.
At the inquest opening, the hearing was told that William had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced episodes of psychosis.
He had been under the care of adult mєntal health services in Doncaster. The hearing also heard that he was considered highly functioning and independent, with no formal care requirements.
His family raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services before his dєatᩚh.
They said it would be for the coroner to determine whether his health and treatment played any part in the circumstances.
The Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust subsequently launched an investigation following his dєatᩚh.
The City of Doncaster Council also confirmed that it had begun a health and safety investigation into the incident.
THE FAMILY’S MESSAGE: REMEMBER WILLIAM WITH COMPASSION
As attention surrounding the incident continues, William’s family’s message has remained focused on their grief and their wish for answers.
They said they hoped the relevant authorities would establish what led to the events of October 10, while asking the public to respect the ongoing process.
Their statement also served as a reminder that behind every widely reported tᩚraɢedy are loved ones trying to come to terms with an unimaginable loss.
William was more than the circumstances of his final day. He was a son, a former student, a young performer and a person deeply loved by his family.
The full inquest into his dєatᩚh is scheduled for March 18, 2027.
For now, his loved ones are asking for privacy, understanding and compassion as they remember the young man they knew and loved.
