WHY WAS ELEANOR BARNFIELD TARGETED? Mother of Two, 47, diᩚєs After Alleged Attack at Her Workplace as Clifford Foster, 61, Faces Murder Trial
A 47-year-old housing association worker has died following an alleged attack at a sheltered housing complex in Bridgend, South Wales. Clifford Foster, 61, has been charged with her murder. As her family mourns an irreplaceable mother and loved one, investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the tᩚraɢedy.
The dєatᩚh of Eleanor Barnfield has left a community in South Wales devastated, with family, friends and colleagues struggling to come to terms with the loss of a woman remembered for her kindness, courage and dedication.
Eleanor, 47, died in hospital on October 19, 2026, after sustaining serious injuries in an incident connected to Ger-y-Nant, a sheltered housing complex in Bridgend where she worked for the housing association Valleys to Coast.
Clifford Foster, 61, from Bridgend, has been charged with her murder. He appeared before Newport Magistrates’ Court on October 23 and was subsequently brought before Cardiff Crown Court on October 26.
The case has raised serious questions about what happened at the housing complex that day. However, police have urged the public not to speculate about the circumstances, particularly now that criminal proceedings are underway.
WHAT HAPPENED ON OCTOBER 19?
Emergency services were called to Coity Road in Bridgend at approximately 12:43 p.m. on Monday, October 19, following reports that a car had collided with a wall.
When officers arrived, they discovered that the driver, later identified as Eleanor Barnfield, had sustained injuries described by police as puncture wounds unrelated to the collision.
She was taken to hospital, where medical staff made efforts to save her life. Sadly, she later died from her injuries.
Police subsequently established that the injuries were believed to have been sustained in an alleged stabbing incident at or near Ger-y-Nant, a sheltered accommodation property managed by Valleys to Coast.
The circumstances surrounding the car journey have also attracted public attention. Reports circulated suggesting Eleanor had attempted to make her own way to hospital after the incident.
However, the Welsh Ambulance Service later rejected claims circulating online that a delayed emergency response had forced her to drive herself to hospital.
The service confirmed that a response unit arrived at the Coity Road collision scene seven minutes after the initial emergency call. Two additional emergency ambulances subsequently arrived, and advanced ᑕriᩚtiᩚcal care support was provided by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service, which attended by air ambulance.
The service also said its preliminary investigations had been unable to identify calls from Eleanor’s phone numbers, with further inquiries continuing.

LIFFORD FOSTER, 61, CHARGED WITH MURDER
Following the incident, South Wales Police launched a major investigation around Ger-y-Nant.
Clifford Foster, 61, was arrested on suspicion of murder after a significant police operation at the sheltered housing complex.
He was formally charged with the murder of Eleanor Barnfield on October 22.
During his first court appearance at Newport Magistrates’ Court on October 23, Foster spoke only to confirm his personal details. He was not required to enter a plea.
The court was informed that the case would proceed to Cardiff Crown Court.
At a subsequent hearing on October 26, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke set November 23 as the plea and trial preparation hearing date, with a provisional trial date of April 12, 2027.
Foster was remanded in custody.
Police have specifically emphasized that the incident is not being investigated as a domestic matter.
Senior Investigating Officer Claire Lamerton said:
“My thoughts remain with Eleanor’s loved ones at such a devastating time, and they continue to be supported by specialist officers.”
She also urged members of the public not to speculate about the circumstances because court proceedings were active.
WHO WAS ELEANOR BARNFIELD?
Beyond the circumstances of her dєatᩚh, Eleanor was a mother, family member and valued colleague whose absence has left an enormous void in the lives of those closest to her.
She worked for Valleys to Coast, a housing association serving communities across the Bridgend area.
Ger-y-Nant, where the incident occurred, is a sheltered housing and retirement complex consisting of 13 flats and intended for residents aged 60 and over.
Eleanor’s work brought her into the community she served, and her colleagues remembered her as someone who made a meaningful contribution to the organization and the people it supported.
Her family released a deeply emotional tribute following her dєatᩚh.
“Mum was the kindest, most loving bravest person in the world.”
They continued:
“She meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”
Those words reflected the enormous place Eleanor held in the lives of her loved ones.
HER EMPLOYER PAYS TRIBUTE
Valleys to Coast also expressed profound sadness following the dєatᩚh of its colleague.
Chief Executive Jo Oak said:
“We are devastated by the tragic dєatᩚh of our colleague, Eleanor Barnfield.”
She described Eleanor as a much-valued member of the team, adding that her loss had been deeply felt by everyone who knew and worked alongside her.
“Eleanor made an important contribution to our organisation and to the communities we serve, and she will be remembered with great warmth and affection.”
The organization extended its deepest sympathies to Eleanor’s family and friends and confirmed that it was cooperating fully with South Wales Police.
QUESTIONS REMAIN AS THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
One of the most difficult questions surrounding Eleanor’s dєatᩚh is why the alleged attack happened.
At this stage, police have not publicly established a motive, and no confirmed explanation has been released regarding what may have led to the incident.
Investigators have also cautioned against online speculation.
What is known is that Eleanor was working at a sheltered housing complex when the alleged incident occurred, that she sustained injuries unrelated to the subsequent vehicle collision, and that a 61-year-old man has been charged in connection with her dєatᩚh.
As the legal process moves forward, the circumstances will be examined through the courts.
For Eleanor’s family, however, the legal proceedings cannot undo the loss of a woman they described as their rock.
A mother of two, a loved one and a valued member of her workplace community, Eleanor’s life is being remembered by those who knew her for far more than the tragic circumstances in which it ended.
Her family now faces the difficult task of moving forward without someone they described as the kindest, most loving and bravest person in their world.
Rest in peace, Eleanor Barnfield. Your family, friends and colleagues will carry your memory with them.
