On the morning of April 15, 2026, 8-year-old Adrian Sue Thompson was eating lunch in the cafeteria at Velma Penny Elementary School in Lindale, Texas, when she suddenly stood from her table around 11:40 a.m. Surveillance video released by her family shows her coughing into a napkin, heaving, and holding her hands near her throat as she walked through the room. She approached a supervising staff member and gestured toward her mouth in a clear attempt to signal distress. According to the Texas Rangers report, the adult believed Adrian was about to vomit, directed her toward a trash can, and asked whether she wanted to go to the restroom. Adrian nodded and left, only to race back seconds later waving her arms before sprinting alone toward the nurse’s office.
By the time she reached the nurse roughly two minutes later, Adrian was pointing to her mouth, trying to speak, and her face had begun to turn blue. The nurse performed the Heimlich maneuver, but Adrian collapsed.
