‘WHY ME?’: IDENTICAL BABY TWIN FACES LIFE-CHANGING AMPUTATION AFTER RARE MEDICAL CONDITION LEAVES HER FAMILY FIGHTING FOR ANSWERS

When Christina first discovered she was expecting twins, she and her partner Myles could hardly contain their excitement. But at her 20-week pregnancy scan, their happiness was suddenly mixed with heartbreak when doctors revealed that one of their unborn boys had a rare limb condition.

In February, Christina, 34, was halfway through her pregnancy when specialists delivered the devastating news. One of her twin boys, later named Rufio, was missing a bone in his lower right leg and had a clubfoot.

The couple had initially been thrilled to learn they were expecting twins. After joking about the possibility of having two babies, they were stunned when a 12-week scan revealed two heartbeats. A blood test later confirmed they were expecting two boys.

But during the 20-week scan, the sonographer struggled to measure Twin B’s right leg. Christina immediately sensed something was wrong.

A specialist later explained that the baby had a clubfoot and was missing his tibia, the main bone in the lower leg. They warned that he might need several complicated operations or eventually require an amputation.

Christina was heartbroken. She worried about what this would mean for her little boy’s future and whether he would be able to enjoy the same childhood experiences as his brother.

However, she and Myles decided to face each challenge as it came.

In June, at 37 weeks and one day, Christina underwent a planned Caesarean section at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide.

Their boys arrived just three minutes apart. Alfie weighed 3.1kg, while Rufio weighed 2.7kg. Both had beautiful heads of brown hair, just like their father.

Doctors confirmed that the identical twins had low muscle tone but were otherwise healthy. Further examinations revealed that Rufio had tibial hemimelia, an extremely rare congenital condition in which the tibia bone is completely absent.

His missing bone also meant his knee and ankle joints were unstable, making it difficult for him to support his weight.

Doctors initially recommended an amputation when Rufio was around two years old. But Christina, who works as an orthopaedic nurse, began researching the condition and possible treatment options.

She discovered that having the procedure before Rufio started walking could make it easier for him to adapt to a prosthetic leg.

After trying serial casting to improve the position of his foot and lower leg, the family realized that his missing bone continued to prevent him from standing independently.

Christina eventually asked surgeons to bring the operation forward.

In September, when Rufio was just 15 months old, he underwent a three-hour operation to amputate his right leg at the knee, as he had been born without a functioning knee joint.

What happened next amazed his family and medical team.

Just 48 hours after surgery, Rufio was already standing in his hospital bed on one leg and waving to the nurses.

“He’s our little fighter,” Christina said proudly.

Six days later, Rufio returned home, where he was finally reunited with his twin brother. The boys’ faces lit up when they saw each other again.

His recovery involved physiotherapy, occupational therapy and hydrotherapy to help him build strength and confidence.

Then, in November, just two months after surgery, Rufio received his first prosthetic leg, specially inspired by his favorite television show, Bluey.

For Christina, seeing her little boy stand with his new prosthetic was an incredibly emotional milestone. The family affectionately calls it his “leggy”, although Rufio sometimes seems more interested in playing with it than wearing it!

Today, Alfie and Rufio are growing into two cheeky little boys with very different personalities. Both love playing with balls, cars and swimming in their grandmother’s pool. Rufio is the quieter twin, enjoying puzzles and books, while Alfie loves running, throwing and playing.

Because of their low muscle tone, both boys have reached some developmental milestones later than other children their age. Alfie took his first steps at 16 months, and Christina is eagerly waiting to see Rufio reach that milestone in his own time.

She has also watched the special bond between the twins grow. Alfie has already found ways to include his brother in playtime, even pushing Rufio around the house on their train set.

Christina once feared that Rufio might grow up feeling different from his brother or wondering why his journey was not the same.

But watching them together has given her a different perspective.

Their childhood may look a little different, but their dreams, laughter and love for each other are no less extraordinary.
