“I’M DEVASTATED…” — AFTER DECADES OF CHANGING FAMILIES’ LIVES, DIY SOS PROJECT MANAGER IAN HODGKINSON FACES AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

For years, he helped turn homes that families could barely live in into places filled with comfort, safety and independence. But now, following the BBC’s decision to put DIY SOS on hold in 2027, Ian Hodgkinson has admitted he is devastated — not simply for himself, but for the vulnerable families who may no longer receive the help they desperately need.

For nearly three decades, DIY SOS has brought some of Britain’s most emotional television moments into living rooms across the country.

Viewers watched as exhausted families stood outside their homes, often struggling with illness, disability, bereavement or overwhelming personal circumstances.

Then came the transformation.

Walls came down. Rooms were rebuilt. Specialist equipment was installed. Wheelchair-accessible spaces appeared where they had once seemed impossible.

And behind those extraordinary projects stood a team of construction professionals, suppliers and volunteers who gave their time and expertise to make the changes happen.

One of the people at the heart of that work was Ian Hodgkinson.

With more than 40 years of experience in construction, the DIY SOS project manager has spent years helping turn ambitious plans into life-changing realities.

But following the BBC’s announcement that the programme will be rested in 2027, Ian has spoken openly about the emotional impact of the decision.

“I’m devastated,” he admitted.

His greatest concern, however, is not about losing a television programme.

It is about the families who might never get the opportunity to receive the help that could transform their everyday lives.

Diy sos star ian hodgkinson on bbc show endingA SHOW THAT WAS ABOUT SO MUCH MORE THAN RENOVATION

DIY SOS first appeared on BBC television in 1999, initially helping homeowners tackle failed DIY projects and renovation problems.

Over time, it developed into one of Britain’s best-known home renovation programmes.

Presented by Nick Knowles, the show eventually became famous for its large-scale builds, bringing together builders, electricians, plumbers, designers, suppliers and hundreds of volunteers.

The families featured were often facing extraordinary challenges.

Some had children with complex disabilities and needed homes adapted to accommodate wheelchairs, medical equipment and specialist care.

Others were coping with serious illness, bereavement or homes that had become unsafe or unsuitable for their needs.

For these families, the renovations were never simply about having a beautiful kitchen or a newly decorated living room.

They were about being able to live with greater dignity, independence and comfort.

And Ian believes that is what made the programme so important.

“People see an incredible transformation on television, but what we’re really building is a chance for a family to live differently,” he explained.

He described how a project could mean a child finally having their own bedroom, a parent no longer needing to carry their child upstairs, or someone finally feeling safe inside their own home.

“We’re changing lives, and the thought of families missing out on that opportunity is incredibly difficult,” he said.

Among the families whose lives were transformed through DIY SOS was nine-year-old Isla’s family from Aylestone, Leicestershire.

Isla lives with Mandibuloacral Dysplasia, a rare genetic condition that affects bone development and can cause serious health complications.

Before the renovation, everyday life presented enormous practical challenges for her family.

Her mother, Stacey, had to provide extensive hands-on care, often carrying and supporting her daughter around the home.

There was also limited space for the medical equipment Isla needed.

The DIY SOS team, with Ian involved as project manager, helped transform the property into a more suitable environment.

The changes gave Isla greater space and the opportunity to enjoy more independence.

For her family, the difference was about far more than the appearance of their home.

It changed how they could manage daily life and care for their daughter.

Stories like Isla’s help explain why Ian is so concerned about the programme’s future.

Every build represents a real family whose needs cannot simply be put on hold.

THE BBC’S DECISION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

On October 17, 2026, the BBC confirmed that DIY SOS would be rested in 2027 as part of its wider savings challenges.

The broadcaster said the main programme would be replaced by a new spin-off, DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life, produced by South Shore.

The new programme is expected to revisit successful projects from the show’s history and explore the long-term impact of the transformations.

The BBC described the decision as a way to continue the brand in a more cost-effective format.

However, the announcement has raised concerns among people who believe the original programme’s large-scale builds cannot easily be replicated on a smaller budget.

For Ian, the issue is particularly personal.

He knows how much coordination, time, materials and volunteer effort go into each project.

And he understands that the people who benefit most are often those with the fewest alternatives.

His concern is that fewer large-scale projects could mean fewer families receiving the support they need.

THE VOLUNTEERS AND TRADESPEOPLE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE

Ian also made a point of recognizing the people who worked behind the scenes.

He described tradespeople, suppliers and volunteers as the real stars of the programme.

These were people who repeatedly gave up their time, skills and resources to help complete projects that could make an extraordinary difference to strangers.

His message was particularly clear when he spoke about the wider DIY SOS community.

“My heart also goes out to the real stars of each show and that is the trades, the suppliers and volunteers who day after day make the build transformation happen,” he said.

Over the years, thousands of people have contributed to the programme.

Their work helped create homes that were safer, more accessible and better suited to the needs of families facing difficult circumstances.

For Ian, their contribution is part of what made DIY SOS special.

It was never just a television production. It was a community coming together to help people who needed it.

A FUTURE THAT REMAINS UNCERTAIN

The BBC has not announced that the DIY SOS brand is disappearing permanently.

Instead, its main format is being rested in 2027, with the new spin-off intended to revisit previous projects.

But questions remain about whether the large-scale builds that defined the programme will return in their familiar form.

For Ian and the wider team, the uncertainty is difficult because the need for accessible homes and practical support has not disappeared.

There will still be families facing serious illness, children requiring specialist living arrangements and parents struggling to adapt their homes to changing circumstances.

And those families will continue to need help, whether or not cameras are present.

THE REAL LEGACY IS IN THE LIVES THAT CHANGED

After decades in construction, Ian Hodgkinson has seen what happens when people come together for a common purpose.

He has watched volunteers work through exhausting days, tradespeople give their expertise and families return to homes that finally meet their needs.

The finished buildings may be what viewers remember from television.

But for the people who live in those homes, the most important changes happen long after the cameras leave.

A child can move around more freely. A parent can provide care more easily. A family can spend time together without facing the same daily obstacles.

That is the legacy Ian fears could become harder to continue.

His sadness is not simply about the end of a familiar chapter in his working life.

It is about the possibility that other families may never experience the same transformation.

And perhaps that is the most powerful thing DIY SOS has shown viewers over the years.

Sometimes, changing a home means changing an entire life.

For Ian Hodgkinson, the greatest achievement was never the house that stood at the end of a build. It was the family who could finally live more comfortably inside it.
