YORKSHIRE TIGER INCIDENT: FORENSIC FINDINGS REVEAL HOW WILLIAM CHAPMAN DIED — BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN OVER THE FULL EXTENT OF HIS INJURIES

DONCASTER, ENGLAND — New details have emerged following the tragic dєatᩚh of 24-year-old William Chapman, who suffered fatal injuries after entering a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.

An initial post-mortem examination found that Chapman died from multiple traumatic injuries following physical contact with an Amur tiger named Altai.

However, while the broad cause of dєatᩚh has been presented at an inquest, investigators are still awaiting a more detailed medical report outlining the full extent of his injuries.

Online claims suggesting that Chapman suffered as many as 12 broken bones have circulated widely. But that specific figure has not been officially confirmed, and authorities have not released a complete breakdown of his injuries.

For now, one of the most important questions surrounding the incident remains unanswered: exactly what injuries did Chapman sustain during those final moments inside the enclosure?

The opening of the inquest at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on October 15 provided the first formal account of the medical findings.

Coroner’s officer Caitlin Brookes told the hearing that Chapman had entered the tiger enclosure after climbing over two fences at the wildlife park on October 10.

He was approached by Altai, and the physical contact that followed resulted in multiple traumatic injuries that rapidly led to his dєatᩚh.

Paramedics attended the scene, but Chapman was pronounced dead at the wildlife park.

The initial post-mortem examination established the broad cause of dєatᩚh. However, the coroner’s office confirmed that a more substantial report concerning the precise extent of his injuries was still awaited.

This means that some of the most widely shared claims about the incident remain unverified.

HOW THE INCIDENT UNFOLDED

The incident happened shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster.

According to evidence presented at the inquest, Chapman climbed over two fences and entered the area known as Land of the Tigers.

Emergency services were called as the situation unfolded. Visitors were moved away from the area while park staff responded and secured the animal.

The incident prompted the evacuation of the wildlife park and an investigation involving police and other relevant authorities.

Altai, a male Amur tiger, was later confirmed to be safe and well. The park also reassured the public that the animal would not be euthanised as a result of what happened.

The inquest also heard important information about Chapman’s personal circumstances.

He had a history of mєntal illness, had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had experienced previous episodes of psychosis.

He was receiving support from adult mєntal health services in Doncaster. However, the hearing was told that he was considered highly functioning and independent, with no care requirements.

His family had previously raised concerns about his contact with mєntal health services.

Following his dєatᩚh, the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his care.

The role, if any, of his mєntal health history in the events leading up to the incident has not been determined. That remains a matter for the relevant investigations and the coroner.

HIS FAMILY REMEMBERS A MUCH-LOVED YOUNG MAN

Beyond the forensic findings and the ongoing investigations, William Chapman’s dєatᩚh has left his family facing an unimaginable loss.

In a statement, his loved ones described him as a “bright, warm and engaging young man” who was dearly loved.

They also spoke openly about the significant mєntal health difficulties he had experienced over a number of years and asked the public to respect the family’s privacy.

Their statement made clear that they wanted the circumstances surrounding his dєatᩚh to be properly examined, including the concerns they had previously raised about his contact with mєntal health services.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The investigation is continuing on several fronts.

City of Doncaster Council, which is responsible for licensing the wildlife park, has launched a health and safety investigation. South Yorkshire Police have also been making enquiries into the circumstances of the incident.

The coroner is awaiting further medical information, and a full inquest has been scheduled for March 18, 2027.

Until that hearing and the relevant investigations are completed, important details remain unresolved.

The claim about 12 broken bones has not been officially confirmed. The complete medical assessment has not yet been made public, and the full circumstances surrounding Chapman’s entry into the enclosure remain subject to investigation.

For now, the confirmed findings establish that William Chapman died from multiple traumatic injuries following an encounter with Altai.

But behind those medical findings is a family mourning a young man they described as bright, warm and deeply loved — and a series of questions that investigators have yet to fully answer.
