Mother of Two diᩚєs After Seventh-Floor Hotel Window Gives Way as Investigators Turn Their Attention to Hotel Safety

A 26-year-old mother of two plunged to her dєatᩚh from a seventh-floor hotel window in Brazil after the aluminum structure she was leaning against suddenly gave way. Now, investigators are examining whether failures in the hotel’s safety and maintenance contributed to the tᩚraɢedy.

Renata Rebeca Negrão Saldanha dos Santos died in the early hours of November 3 at the Rio Poty Hotel in São Luís, in northeastern Brazil.

Security camera footage captured the moments before the fatal fall. Renata was walking along a hotel corridor with her boyfriend, Leonardo Augusto Pinto França, when the couple stopped to look for the key to their room.

She then sat on the ledge of a window. As she leaned backward against an aluminum structure, the frame suddenly came loose, sending her falling from the seventh floor.

Renata landed on a canopy above the hotel’s entrance. Although she received emergency assistance, she did not survive.

The footage became central to the police investigation. Investigators said it showed no evidence that her boyfriend had pushed or assaulted her. He was questioned and released, and police have said he is not considered a suspect.

According to investigators, the couple had reportedly consumed alcohol that night. Leonardo told police he could not remember the exact moment Renata fell.

But while police have treated the dєatᩚh as an accident, another question has become increasingly important: Why did the window structure come loose in the first place?

Investigators examine possible hotel responsibility

Police are now examining whether the hotel could bear responsibility for the conditions of the building and the window structure.

Detective George Marques said the investigation would consider possible negligence involving the hotel’s infrastructure. Forensic experts have examined the damaged window, but the technical findings have not yet established what caused the structure to detach.

Investigators are looking into whether installation problems, deterioration or inadequate maintenance may have played a role.

The distinction is important: the fact that the window gave way does not, by itself, establish that the hotel was legally responsible.

Hotel was fined after separate safety inspection

The case took another turn after firefighters inspected the Rio Poty Hotel on November 5.

The inspection reportedly identified irregularities involving fire and panic safety measures, including the absence of an updated safety approval certificate. The hotel was notified and fined, and authorities ordered immediate protective measures in areas considered vulnerable.

However, firefighters’ findings concerned fire-safety requirements. They have not established that the window involved in Renata’s fall was defective or that the violations caused her dєatᩚh.

The window itself remains subject to a separate forensic investigation.

A mother of two who never made it home

Renata lived in Ananindeua, in the Brazilian state of Pará, and was the mother of two young children.

She had traveled to São Luís with her boyfriend on October 28. The couple was staying at the hotel while he participated in a poker tournament, and they were expected to return home on November 3, the day she died.

Her body was later transported back to Pará, where relatives gathered to say goodbye.

Her mother, Betty Negrão, spoke through her grief about the devastating news.

“My daughter went out to have fun, and I’m receiving my daughter in a coffin,” she said.

The family has also raised questions about the assistance offered by the hotel after the tᩚraɢedy. Renata’s mother reportedly said the establishment initially indicated it would cover expenses but later paid only for the coffin.

The hotel has expressed condolences and said it is cooperating with authorities. It has also emphasized its commitment to the safety of guests and visitors.

What happens next?

Investigators still need to determine why the aluminum window structure detached and whether any maintenance or safety failures contributed to the fatal fall.

The forensic report is expected to be crucial in assessing the condition of the window and whether anyone could be held legally responsible.

For Renata’s family, the questions go beyond how the accident happened. They want to know whether the tᩚraɢedy could have been prevented.
