GONE FISHING FANS IN TEARS AS BELOVED DOG TED MAKES HIS FINAL TV APPEARANCE

The much-loved rescue dog joined Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse for one last riverside adventure, giving viewers a bittersweet farewell to the little companion who became a star in his own right.

Fans of Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing were left emotional as Ted, the show’s much-loved canine companion, made his final television appearance in the opening episode of the BBC series’ ninth season.

The episode, broadcast on October 25, 2026, saw comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse return to the River Ribble in Lancashire. But for many viewers, the most poignant part of the programme was seeing Ted enjoying the riverbank one last time.

The small Patterdale terrier cross, recognised for his distinctive underbite, gentle personality and mischievous habit of sneaking food, had become an essential part of the show’s appeal.

Ted, the scruffy Patterdale terrier who wandered into Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, has become far more than a background presence — he's a bona fide member of the show's gentle, eccentricA LITTLE DOG WHO STOLE THE SHOW

Ted first appeared on Gone Fishing in 2020 and quickly won over audiences with his relaxed presence beside the two comedians.

While Mortimer and Whitehouse focused on their fishing, Ted would explore the riverbanks, enjoy the outdoors and occasionally help himself to snacks. His owner, Lisa Clark, the programme’s executive producer, once described him as a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion on the show.

Ted was rescued from a dog shelter in Surrey in 2013, when he was around six months old. Over the years, he became a fan favourite and was even given a lifetime achievement award during the show’s 2025 Christmas special.

Ted died in April 2026 at the age of 13. His final episode was filmed before his dєatᩚh, allowing viewers one last chance to see him alongside Mortimer and Whitehouse. The episode included additional footage of the beloved dog as a tribute to his place in the programme.

Mortimer previously described Ted as “the best companion” and “the greatest little chum,” while Whitehouse said goodbye to his old friend with a heartfelt tribute, describing him as a species all his own.

The farewell was especially meaningful because Gone Fishing has always been about more than catching fish. Its gentle mix of friendship, conversation, the outdoors and life’s quieter moments made Ted’s presence feel natural — as though he were simply another member of the group.

For viewers who had welcomed him into their Sunday evenings, seeing him again brought both smiles and sadness.

A PAW PRINT THAT WILL NOT FADE

Ted may have been small, but his place in the hearts of the show’s audience was enormous. From his familiar underbite to his love of riverbank adventures and stolen treats, he brought an unmistakable warmth to every appearance.

His final journey on screen offered fans a chance to celebrate the life of a rescue dog who became a television favourite without ever needing to do anything extraordinary.

Sometimes, all it takes is a gentle presence, a little mischief and the companionship of a much-loved dog to make a lasting impression.

Goodbye, Ted. Thank you for the memories, the smiles and the paw prints you left behind. 🤍🐾
