Father of JonBenét Ramsey Says Modern DNA Tools Could Name Her 𝘬iᩚller Within Months If Police Will Finally Use Them

Nearly thirty years after six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey was found strangled in the basement of her Boulder home, her father John Ramsey continues to argue that the decisive evidence has been in investigators’ possession for most of that time. In recent interviews he has pointed specifically to unidentified male DNA recovered from his daughter’s underwear, from beneath her fingernails, and from the garrote used in the attack. He maintains that advances in forensic genetic genealogy now make it possible to generate a usable family-tree lead from very small or degraded samples, and he has repeatedly estimated a 60 to 70 percent chance that the 𝘬iᩚller could be identified within months if authorities send the material to a specialized private laboratory. Ramsey has offered to cover the cost himself and has brought DNA experts to meetings with Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn to explain the current capabilities of the technology.

The Boulder Police Department’s December 2025 annual update confirmed that detectives conducted new interviews and re-interviewed individuals based on tips received during the preceding year, collected additional evidence, and tested or retested existing items. Chief Redfearn stated that techniques and technology constantly evolve, particularly in DNA analysis, and that the department continues to consult outside experts and federal partners. The update did not disclose which specific items were examined or whether any new profiles were developed, noting that further details could compromise the active investigation. Police have described the case as a continuing top priority and have logged more than 21,000 tips and more than 1,000 interviews across multiple states since 1996.

Ramsey has said he remains uncertain whether the most recent round of testing included forensic genetic genealogy. He has noted that earlier testing performed by a private laboratory in the late 1990s already identified the same unknown male DNA profile on multiple items, and he has questioned why certain pieces of evidence, including the garrote, were not more thoroughly sampled at the time. Authorities have indicated that a Colorado Cold Case Review Team recommended expanded testing with updated methods, and the department has stated it is monitoring technological developments. No public identification of a suspect has resulted from the work described in the 2025 update.

The investigation remains open with no charges filed. Ramsey has said that if modern testing produces no result he will at least know every available avenue was pursued. Police continue to urge anyone with information to contact them directly rather than through public speculation, and they have emphasized that the combination of new interviews, retested evidence, and evolving DNA methods keeps the possibility of a resolution alive even after nearly three decades.
