Violent crimes have single largest annual drop ever recorded during first year of Trump’s second term: DOJ report

WASHINGTON — Violent crimes dropped by at least 25% across most categories in 2025, the first year of President Trump’s second term, according to a new Department of Justice report.

Preliminary estimates in the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) released Monday found the majority of non-fatal violent crimes — including rapes, 𝘴єxual assaults and robberies — dropped by one-quarter from 2024.

Last year also saw a 31% reduction in aggravated assaults, a drop of 390,000 in raw numbers; a 25% reduction in burglary or trespassing, 460,000 fewer; and a 30% decrease in motor vehicle thefts, amounting to 349,000 fewer vehicles stolen.

All other types of household thefts fell by 19%.

The declines were the largest single-year reduction in the history of the NCVS, which is compiled by the DOJ’s Bureau of Justice Statistics and began in 1973.

The survey is based on a nationally representative sample of about 240,000 persons in about 150,000 households, taken from US Census Bureau data.

“This report is proof that President Trump’s ‘Make America Safe Again’ agenda is working,” said Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward in a statement.

“Under President Trump and Attorney General [Todd] Blanche, the safety of law-abiding Americans will always come first,” Woodward added. “This success reinforces our commitment to ensuring every American can live, work, and raise a family without fear.”

The declines are steeper than those reported by the FBI this past May, which recorded aggravated assault dropping by more than 7% and violent crime declined by about 9.3%.

Officials have credited the reductions to Trump’s push to end cashless bail policies, deploy the National Guard to Washington, DC, and other major cities, and close the southern border to illegal immigration.

As of mid-November 2024, just after Trump’s election to a second term, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) data indicated more than 58,000 illegal border crossers residing in NYC had been convicted of crimes or had charges pending.

Meanwhile, violent crime in the nation’s capital had dropped 45% within one month of Guardsmen being deployed on the streets, prompting left-leaning HBO host Bill Maher to dub Trump the “f–k around and find out” president last month.
