NOLAN WELLS CASE UPDATE: AT 2:18 P.M., HIS PHONE WAS UNLOCKED — BUT WAS HE ALREADY IN THE WATER?

A key timestamp is drawing renewed attention in the case of Nolan Wells, the 18-year-old who disappeared during a Fourth of July trip to Horn Island, Mississippi, and was found d-ead two days later. Newly discussed digital forensic findings have placed the last known use of his phone at approximately 2:18 p.m. on July 4 — a detail that has become central to questions about his final hours.

According to Andrew Garrett, a digital forensic expert hired by Nolan’s family, location data showed that the phone remained on the boat while the group was at Horn Island. The device’s activity helped investigators reconstruct part of the day’s timeline, but it could not independently establish Nolan’s precise location or physical condition at that moment.

That distinction matters. Although the headline raises the possibility that Nolan was already in the water when the phone was last used, the timestamp alone does not prove that claim. Establishing what happened would require additional evidence connecting the phone’s activity to Nolan himself.

The phone examination also drew attention to Snapchat messages that were removed after they were sent. Garrett later clarified that these were messages deleted remotely by other users, not evidence that someone physically unlocked Nolan’s phone after his last use. He said the device remained locked until his parents received it.

Meanwhile, the state’s autopsy reportedly found no water in Nolan’s lungs, airway or stomach, while documenting bruising to the back of his head. These findings have prompted further questions from his family and legal team, who have challenged whether the available evidence fully explains his dєatᩚh.

A grand jury declined to bring criminal charges in September 2026. Authorities have not established criminal wrongdoing by Nolan’s friends, while his family continues to seek answers and further scrutiny of the evidence.

The 2:18 p.m. timestamp may help clarify the timeline, but it does not resolve the mystery on its own. The central question remains what happened during Nolan’s final hours on Horn Island — and whether further evidence can provide the answers his family is still waiting for.
