‘I WAS TERRIFIED I MIGHT NEVER HOLD MY BABY AGAIN’: EIGHT-MONTH-OLD LUCA RUSHED TO INTENSIVE CARE AFTER HIS HEALTH SUDDENLY DETERIORATED

What began as a quick trip to A&E turned into every parent’s worst nightmare for the family of eight-month-old Luca, whose sudden illness left him fighting for recovery in intensive care.

Luca was taken to Southend Hospital after becoming unexpectedly unwell. His condition required immediate attention, and he was admitted to the children’s ward, where doctors placed him on an Optiflow machine to help him breathe.

Cannulas were inserted into his tiny hands as medical staff monitored him closely throughout the night. But despite their efforts, Luca grew weaker, and his breathing became increasingly shallow.

His parents could only watch anxiously as the medical team made a difficult decision: Luca needed to be sedated and placed on a ventilator.

“I can still hear those words in my head,” his mother recalled. “My heart sank. I was terrified, but I knew we had to trust the doctors to do everything they could for our little boy.”

For any parent, seeing their baby surrounded by medical equipment is heartbreaking. For Luca’s family, the uncertainty of what would happen next made every moment feel unbearably long.

After being sedated and placed on a ventilator, Luca was transferred by ambulance with the PANDR ambulance team to the Royal London Hospital. There, he was immediately admitted to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU).

His parents, together with his partner Robbie, stood beside his hospital bed, watching the ventilator help their little boy breathe.

“He was so tiny lying there among all the wires and tubes,” his mother shared. “All I wanted was to pick him up, hold him close and tell him how much he was loved. We held each other’s hands, trying to stay strong when everything felt so frightening.”

The sudden emergency had left the family completely unprepared. They arrived at the Royal London Hospital without clothes, toiletries or the basic things they needed for an extended stay.

The hospital kindly provided them with a bed for the first night, allowing them to remain close to Luca. But as exhaustion and anxiety began to take their toll, they faced another challenge: finding somewhere to rest while their baby continued receiving specialist care.

Then a nurse told them about Stevenson House, a Home from Home accommodation service run by The Sick Children’s Trust.

The family had never heard of the charity before. But when they were offered a room, the relief was overwhelming.

“At the hardest point in our lives, it felt like the most meaningful gift,” Luca’s mother said. “We were already carrying so much fear, and having somewhere safe to stay near our baby made an enormous difference.”

For Luca’s family, the journey has been about more than medical treatment. It has also been about finding the strength to face each uncertain day, supporting one another and holding on to hope while their little boy receives the care he needs.

Although the sudden change in Luca’s health turned their world upside down, the kindness of hospital staff and the support offered through Stevenson House gave his parents one less thing to worry about.

“No parent ever expects to find themselves in this situation,” his mother reflected. “You take life one moment at a time, and you pray for your baby to get stronger. Being close to Luca is where we need to be.”
