THE 20-MINUTE GAP: WHO WAS USING THE SURFACE PRO WHILE LINDSAY WAS AT THE DOCTOR?

A narrow window of digital activity from August 23, 2022, has become another point of attention in the Lindsay Clancy case.

During testimony at trial, Mᴀssachusetts State Police Sgt. Kyle Pavao described activity recorded on a Microsoft Surface Pro at around 9:40 a.m. that morning. The device showed a visit to Lindsay Clancy’s Facebook account, followed by Spotify activity involving country singer Tom T. Hall and a Google search for his name. The user then accessed Hall’s Wikipedia page.

The timing matters because Lindsay was reportedly at a medical appointment for her son Dawson around that period. Her defense attorney questioned whether the digital activity could automatically be attributed to Lindsay.

Pavao acknowledged during questioning that he could not establish who was physically using the Surface Pro at the time. The defense also highlighted that Patrick Clancy had access to the computer and had previously listened to Tom T. Hall.

That leaves an important distinction between what the device recorded and who was actually behind the keyboard.

The digital record can establish that activity occurred on the Surface Pro. It does not, by itself, establish with certainty which person was operating it at every moment.

And that is why the roughly 20-minute window continues to attract attention.

Was the computer being used by Lindsay? Could another person have accessed the device? Or was some of the activity connected to an earlier browsing session or account that investigators could not conclusively attribute to one individual?

Those questions became part of the defense’s broader challenge to the digital evidence presented at trial.

The case remains legally unresolved. Clancy’s first trial ended in a mistrial after the jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict, and prosecutors have continued to consider their next steps. Recent hearings have also seen the defense challenge the sufficiency and interpretation of evidence against her.

For now, the Surface Pro activity is a documented part of the investigation — but the idenтιтy of the person behind that activity during the disputed window remains a key question rather than an established fact.
