MARTIN FRIZELL SHARES HEARTBREAKING UPDATE ON WIFE FIONA PHILLIPS’ ALZHEIMER’S BATTLE
After nearly three decades of marriage, Martin Frizell has opened up about the painful changes he has witnessed in his wife, former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips, as she continues living with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
For years, Fiona Phillips was one of the most familiar faces on British breakfast television. But away from the cameras, the former GMTV presenter and her family are facing a very different chapter of life.
Her husband, television producer Martin Frizell, has spoken candidly about the emotional impact of her Alzheimer’s diagnosis, describing how the progressive condition has gradually changed everyday life for the woman he has loved for decades.
Fiona, now 65, publicly revealed in 2023 that she had been diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease at the age of 61.
“SHE’S STILL VERY MUCH WITH US”
During an emotional appearance on ITV’s Lorraine in February 2026, Martin described the changes he had witnessed in his wife.
He revealed that Fiona no longer remembers important occasions such as Christmas, New Year and Valentine’s Day.
“It’s wretched… not just for her but for the family as well,” he said.
However, Martin was also keen to remind viewers that Fiona remains very much herself in many ways.
“She’s still there,” he explained, adding that she remains the stubborn, familiar woman he has always known.
He also described how difficult it can be to watch someone who was once so energetic, confident and full of life gradually lose memories and abilities that had always been part of her identity.
A DIAGNOSIS THAT CHANGED THEIR FAMILY’S LIFE
Fiona first noticed symptoms including anxiety and brain fog, initially believing they might be connected to menopause.
But in early 2022, doctors confirmed that she was experiencing early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.
The diagnosis was particularly difficult because both of her parents had also lived with the condition.
Martin later explained that genetic testing had not shown the disease to be directly inherited, although her family history meant she was considered more predisposed to developing it.
Since then, the couple have had to adapt to a new reality, with Martin taking on an increasingly important caring role.
He stepped down from his position as editor of ITV’s This Morning in December 2024, explaining that his family priorities were changing.
“SHE DOESN’T KNOW I’M HER HUSBAND”
In an earlier interview, Martin also spoke about one of the most emotionally difficult aspects of Fiona’s condition.
He revealed that there are moments when she does not recognise him as her husband.
Although such moments are painful, he said he understands that the illness is responsible for the changes in her memory and perception.
He has also explained that Fiona sometimes prefers not to discuss Alzheimer’s directly, choosing instead to believe that some of her difficulties are connected to depression.
Martin has tried to respect the way she copes with the diagnosis while continuing to provide support and companionship.
MUSIC AND FAMILY REMAIN IMPORTANT
Despite the challenges, Martin has spoken about the small moments that continue to bring happiness into their lives.
Music, in particular, remains a source of comfort for Fiona. The family often plays songs by Rod Stewart, whom she interviewed during her broadcasting career and with whom she developed a friendship.
Martin has also shared photographs of the couple spending time together, offering glimpses of their life away from television.
The couple, who married in 1997, have two sons, Nathaniel and Mackenzie.
A HUSBAND’S CALL FOR GREATER SUPPORT
Beyond sharing his family’s experience, Martin has become an outspoken advocate for greater investment in Alzheimer’s research.
He has repeatedly criticised the lack of funding and support available to people living with the disease and their families.
His message is that Alzheimer’s does not affect only the person diagnosed. It changes the lives of partners, children and relatives who must learn how to navigate an uncertain future alongside someone they love.
For Fiona and Martin, the journey continues one day at a time.
And although her illness has changed many parts of their lives, Martin’s public messages have consistently shown his determination to stand beside his wife through the difficult days ahead.
